If you ever visit the science museum in Milan, Italy (which has a huge rail collection), step outside and look at the abandoned tram line on the perimeter. I first saw it in 1988, and it had been out of service for years even then. I am surprised it is still there, but Google street view clearly shows it. Check out the gauntlet track at the intersection.

Put the red marker away. Gauntlet is acceptable according to Merriam-Webster. :)

My American Heritage dictionary says that "gauntlet" is acceptable for both meanings in modern English. And it shows "gantlet" as a variant.

Under usage it says. at one time, the different spellings denoted the different meanings and origins: One threw down the gauntlet. One ran the gantlet.

Gauntlet was a glove or a cuff of a glove and one threw down a glove (or gauntlet) to issue a challenge.

Gantlet was two rows of men with sticks or weapons to beat a person forced to run between the rows. Thus this is an ordeal or trial (like a political press conference) a narrow a narrow passageway (like gantlet track through a bridge or tunnel).

So be modern, or traditional, or don't care at all.

...because the bus voltage is different than the tram voltage, and they can't share a wire?

Someone correct me if I'm wrong, I'm not primarily a traction person, but I believe that trolley buses work electrically very differently from rail traction, in that with an electric street railway the track serves as the ground/return, while the bus needs the second wire above as the return.
