Need help in moving a caboose

Is it possible I've seen pictures of a tractor that pulls a railcar with the trucks removed and replaced by highway bogies? Was this somewhere in the Mid-west? I'd like to contact that operation.

In the eastern US, try Mark Eyer at Daily Express, Carlisle, PA; they have moved many railcars with the dolly arrangement.

And for the record Mr. Eyer is an official "card-carrying railfan" and an NRHS official as well, so he's not your "usual" trucker.

As for bogies where the rail trucks were, it's been done many times, in some cases for full-sized passenger cars. My impression/experience is that this is adequate for short moves (say, cross-town or a couple miles) at low speed, but not for long distances or higher speeds. Your mileage may vary, as the saying goes.

I think in order to be able to help you better where is it coming from and going too? A cost savings can be done if you can use the same company at both ends. Keep in mind the caboose if done by trucking will go on one flatbed and the trucks on the other.

FYI, our seven cars were moved by dolly and over 250 miles. The trucks mainained highway speed at 65 m.p.h. Not a single problem. They could not move at night, however.

The people who own Reader Railroad in Arkansas regularly move their cars, including a caboose, using a dolly arrangment to tow it like a trailer. You might try contacting them about moving your car.
