I remember these decals being used on the doors of company service vehicles such as pickup trucks. Early to mid 1960s General Motors products painted a dark green come to mind.

Another great shot from Dick Hovey, this time of our very own 2019 shortly after being repainted by Chrome Crankshaft. Glass has yet to be installed and the carbody in need of a good wash however, it can be safely said the unit has not looked this good since rolling of of EMD twenty-five years earlier. Hopefully, the same can be said when she rolls of out the Volunteer Shop.

This past weekend did not see much work on the 2019 with most volunteers at the Amherst Railway Society show in West Springfield, MA. However, the previous weekend saw continued removal of rotted material along the base of the cab. We did encounter our first issue, a welded sand hatch. After removing the necessary screws, our master metal worker, Sam Walker, found the hatch still solidly secured to the wall. Upon further inspection, it was found the hatch had been literally welded into place. To reverse this work, it was necessary to remove the cab wall and floor on the firemen's side.

On a related note, we are in need of further funding to complete the project. We estimate $10,000 will see it through to full completion. Please consider donating here:

Although the RMNE's virtual presence has been quiet, the work occurring at our shop has been fervent. Members have been sanding, sanding, and well, sanding! The painters will be arriving next Monday so final preparations will be completed this coming weekend. While the current photographs documenting the progress are rather unremarkable (the unit looks as it did under Penn Central circa 1974), our graphic designer just completed scanning a number of items which will be used to interpret the locomotive both at Spencer as well as back home in Thomaston. Enjoy!

I can still identify different makes of 4x5 sheet film, in the dark, by the notches on the end.

OK, here's the result of all the work during the past three and a half months:

Painting was completed on Monday April 14. We used a contractor (Southern Pride Equip Painting) to prime and paint the unit. Paint was an epoxy primer and Delfleet Essential topcoat. The re-assembly of the cab interior, side grilles, number boards and portholes, etc., etc. has commenced. Lots more to do, we are happy with the results so far.

Wow! Does that churn up some warm memories! This locomotive is going to stand out amongst her peers. Well done, preservationists!

Reassembly was started tonight. Cut levers are back on the front, battery box doors and cab signal box covers back on with all hardware.

After spending 2 days working on the mangled steam pipe connection cover (missing in the pic from the pilot) a new sheet of steel was obtained and will be cut to size. The original is much better than what it was but will take to much work to repair in the time we have. It will be kept as a spare for our other unit 2002 seen in the background. Both FL-9's suffered from similar damage from hitting debris in the gauge sometime in their past.
