You should talk to JC McHugh at McHugh Locomotive and Crane for sure. They've been doing this sort of thing for decades. They are great people and understand and have been involved in preservation as well. Email JC at: jcmchugh@verizon.net

I used JC to build up the roller bearing trucks and change them out for PRR 9206. They also did the AC couplers and safety appliance work.

Great guys to work with.

As far as putting in on a flat car.....well....when I was looking to move LV 112 out of Tennessee, it was going to be 2-3 times more to move it on a flat car then to re-truck it and move it on its own wheels.

The money you spend on a flatcar is gone once the loco is back on the ground. With a re-truck job at least you have something when it gets tot the other end.

Russ Swinnerton photographed an Alco yesterday on a multi axle semi truck with a banner on its side saying " The North Carolina Railroad Museum and New Hope Valley Railway". Could this be the S-1 that is the subject of this thread?

I would love to know what the cost of that move was, as a reference.

It was - and I don't know what the final tally will be.

WHAT?!! No offence, but you were burned my friend! It can be done a lot cheaper than that, especially if you are a registered charity. If you know how to talk to the right people it can be loaded and even shipped for a reasonable cost and even some cases next to nothing. We've done it.

Rob, we've done this many times too ( one steam locomotive and a bunch of passenger cars).

However, consider the possibility that the locomotive or car is on the other side of the country, assuming it's even in your own country.

Given the logistics of getting enough of your volunteers grouped together for a sufficient time (can they use vacation time without impacting their family?), with housing and transportation, arranging crane service in an unfamiliar location (and having enough trust that they will bring the proper slings, spreaders, etc.), and the need to either transport your tools, rent, or buy new, that $12,500 starts to look like a bargain.

You might get very lucky and have a friendly group willing to help at the other end, but being able to drain their resources for the move could be difficult too.

A couple of years ago we were considering a couple of very desirable cars from CP in Alberta, but didn't pursue it for these very reasons.

Hello Steve Hunter,

I'm curious how the approach was done to the crane companies, rigging companies, railroad and flat cars from TTX or Kasgro. We are a registered charity and the only sympathy that I have been given is that is nice but we are a for profit company speech.

Not being sarcastic here but really curious what method was used to get the railroad and other parties to roll over to ship for next to nothing or donate there time. Seems the companies in the area I'm dealing with even talking to the owners of the crane and rigging companies want there prices and that is it. So I'm all ears if you have suggestions on how to approach the companies.

Thanks!!

Hi, Steven:

Not sure about getting these companies to donate their services. In my experience, those opportunities are few and far between these days.

Our approach was very simple, we paid the railways, crane companies, and float services the going rate. Prior to every move, one needs to raise lots of funds. In a number of cases the companies voluntarily gave us lower rates since we're a charity, but we don't push the issue.

We have never hired a rigging contractor, having very capable volunteers who were able to travel to each loading site.

I doubt we would be able to have cars moved as OCS moves any more- although this was done many times in the past- the accountants are way too sharp, computer systems track everything, and local officers don't have that sort of freedom any more. Not to mention, of course, the usual fear of plain journals and old equipment.

Our hospital train moving five heavyweight cars over CN and CP from Montreal to Ottawa, then to Smiths Falls 25 years ago didn't cost us anything (the road move across town sure did, though), but today's world is a very different place.

I'm sorry I can't give much help on this question, other than knocking on a lot of doors and asking very nicely!

Sometimes I have had luck with getting a company to donate the service if we pay the direct cost. Example - a quarry donated several loads of stone and we paid the trucking fees.
