Covington roundhouse

RE: this piece from Flimsies that mentions the C&O roundhouse in Covington, KY: Does it really still stand? I had heard that all C&O roundhouses were now demolished.

Bob:

The NRHS roundhouse lists says there is a C&O roundhouse in Sheliana (Shelby), Kentucky, in Pike county. Still trying to figure out if that's in or near Covington.

Below is a link to an aerial photo of 1400 Madison Ave in Covington, Kentucky. I'll levae it to your powers of observation to determine if there's a roundhouse at that location or not.

I live within a mile a mile of Madison Rd. in Covington, KY and the roundhouse does in fact still exist. It is now owned by a paper bag manufacturing company. Other than the tracks and turntable, the roundhouse is still basically 100% intact right down to the Chesapeake & Ohio lettering above the entrance.

I think many of us would like to see some recent ground-level photos when and if you have time. The link below appears to be a very old photo..

The question still is not answered as to whether this is the roundhouse listed on the NRHS database. If so, why is it called Shelbiana (Shelby)?

Shelby is not in Northern Kentucky and must be another roundhouse. The Covington, KY. roundhouse is the last full roundhouse remaining in the Tri-State area. Only a portion of the former CH&D Roundhouse complex remains behind the former B&O warehouse in Cincinnati. This was part of the boiler house or machine shop, I think? This was the shops for the CH&D and the former Central Union Station (Big Four) was nearby next to the C&O Bridge.

Sorry I don't have more exact information. I am out of the country and don't have access to data.

The NRHS database appears to be a work in process and is not a complete list. Shelby is located in eastern Kentucky and does in fact exist, but this is not the Covington roundhouse in question. In addition, I believe there is a C&O roundhouse with working turntable still located in Russell, KY being used by CSX. It was still there in Sept. 2000 and I've heard nothing about it being torn down since. I'd like to take pictures of the Covington Roundhouse, but unfortunately I'll be out of town until after the first of the year. Hopefully it will still be standing when I return.

The Shelbiana roundhouse was a small facility in the mountains of Eastern KY. It has since been torn down. The town can be found in Google Earth.

The C&O roundhouse in Covington still exists on the north side of W 14th St, just west of Madison Av. The stall fronts have been obscured by a later addition, but the rear is mostly visible. It is actually the 2nd roundhouse on the site, the first having been a full circle roundhouse just south of 13th St for the Kentucky Central.

I believe the postcard which Bob Yarger had posted was mislabeled originally. The roundhouse orientation, surrounding buildings, and trestle in the foreground match that of the long gone L&N roundhouse in Covington, per comparison to a 1909, page 68 Sanborn map.

You can see it well on Google Maps street view. It’s of brick construction and it appears the roof profile has been significantly altered.
