While the streamliners are gathering in Spencer the steamers are gathering in Germany.

WOW!

If only we could swing something like that here, but outside of some narrow gauge examples and perhaps Cass, it would be tough.

Still, one can't help but dream. Let's go first class, and say we are gathering eight locomotives, and that they may not be running now, but we could get them running for this gathering (and whatever jobs we have in mind for them)--and to make it really top notch, we'll do what we have here, have all of them from the same company.

What road could be represented in this depth? Off the top of my head, two would be the PRR (much of that being in the RMPA collection), C&O (2 Alleghenies, 2 Mallets, 12 Kanawhas, a Greenbriar, a Ten Wheeler, and a Consolidation), and the NKP (6 Berkshires, at least 2 Mikados, a Hudson, a Ten Wheeler, 2 0-6-0s (ex-W&LE)). Santa Fe would be there, too, though I don't know all that's around for it, perhaps SP as well.

Something like this was to happen, but for the roof collapse at the B & O Museum,
for the 175th Anniversary of the start of that RR.

June 7 through June 16 during Steamfest III Niles Canyon Railway will have five steam locomotives operating simultaneously. Three belong to Pacific Locomotive Association. Two are visiting.

Train Expo in Michigan, in a few weeks as well...

I don't think this is ever to happen in the US. What you see here is "Plandampf", scheduled steam, meaning the trains in a certain region are being steam-powered for several days. No show, just the regaular trains with regular train fares, at today's speeds but steam-hauled and being on schedule of course.

Shades of Pete Lerro a few years back... Thanks to one of his charters I've done that with two Berkshires, riding in the cab. A bit slower speed, but beggars can't be choosers.

"This event was centered at Neustadt an der Pfalz (a wine-growing area west of the River Rhine) and no less than 10 locos for the specials were temporarily based at the shed in Neustadt. The steam activity extended far and wide on most lines in the Rheinland-Pfalz area and it was impossible to see everything. Nevertheless, it was amazing in 2014 to see no less than 28 steam-hauled trains arrive and depart from Neustadt station between 06.47 and 20.16 on Saturday May 31st and only slightly less on other days! All these additional trains were slotted in amongst the heavy regular traffic in the area including ICE and TGVs and significant freight traffic.

"The successful 5-day steam event was organised, sponsored and entirely paid for by the State of Rheinland-Pfalz. A free event for spectators, all you needed was a regular ticket to ride between the stations of your choice."

Well, there you have it.

It would be interesting to see the upside from tourism vs cost of the event. And then dream of something that progressive happening here.

That's it...who wants to sponsor Big Jim Video Productions on a trip to Germany to capture these events on film next year? Lol...

Why don't you consider running it as an escorted tour, partnering with a local German fan who is bi-lingual in English. You should be able to cover most of your costs of going there and making the video (and perhaps get some free grip help). I would also highly recommend adding in a side trip to the Harz, since you'd be in the area. Fly to and from the right airports, and you could include rides on either ICE or TGV for a real in-depth European railroad experience.

Paul makes an excellent suggestion Big Jim. Count me in schedule and wallet allowing. I'd really enjoy being aboard one of those side by side trains!!

Cover my costs? Hahahahahah that's hysterical. I'm barely making enough as it is to do trips to Owosso and other photo charters. Maybe when I start selling DVD's things may be better. That's why I brought up sponsorship - so a rich railfan could cover all of the costs for me. ;)
