This should be under "railfaning" not preservation. If it came with an explanation and a discussion topic I could see it here, but it doesn't.

I don't understand your complaint, derail. The Colorado Railroad Museum has restored a narrow gauge steam locomotive (D&RGW 491) to operating condition for the first time since it was retired in 1963. Doesn't that count as "preservation"?

As one of the moderators, the original post was not outside of guidelines, but is outside the spirit of the original mission of this board.

There is a difference between railroad preservation, the practice of saving railroads, railroad equipment, railroad artifacts, and railroad history, and simply looking at photos or videos of trains. The intent when this board was created was to facilitate the discussion of how to preserve railroads... not to look at pictures of trains...

There are some really good railfan boards (there are also some really bad ones...) there are Yahoo groups for many many railroads... RYPN is not trying to be either...

With that in mind, the video of this D&RGW K-37 under steam, with a question about the work needed, the costs, planed use of the artifact, problems found and solved ... The discussion might talk about the different approaches used when preserving and operating a locomotive on the C&TS or D&S vs the Colorado Railroad Museum campus would be wonderful (and discussions of that topic are welcome)

But a pretty train video is less on topic... not beyond guide lines, but less on topic..

There was a previous thread about D&RGW 491 entitled "Steam at Colorado Railroad Museum" that I started back in April, and which had some additional comments by other folks. If Joshua's new thread on the K-37 had been put under the "Railfaning" section of RyPN, I would not have known that the 2-8-2 had actually been run there in Golden, as I never check the Railfaning section. I myself don't see this posting as "being outside the spirit of the original mission of this board" at all. I seem to recall an old saying that a photo is worth 10,000 words. Those visuals of 491 operating say quite a bit about the preservation efforts of those at CRM.

It is all about context, knowing the locomotives and the posters. I would assume most of us here already know what's up with the work being done on these two locomotoves or that someone will fill us in (like Kelly did). Plus, Joshua is not a person who would post random railfan videos to this board. If we could "favorite" posters just as we can block posters, JKB would be on my favorite list.

Given some of the drivel we sift through online, I'd suggest a 4-6-2 hauling revenue coal in 2014 and a 2-8-2 coming back to life after 50 years are always going to be worth a post - even if it is assumed everyone knows the context.

I see no reason to complain about HOW a thread gets started. If it takes a couple of "Railfan" pictures to get the discussion started, that's fine with me. What the original post failed to mention was that the 491 was just out of the shop on its maiden voyage. But others have clarified that and a useful discussion is following. Bravo to the "railfan"!

Other than the injector union valves, does anyone know the work that went into making the 491 operable?

My own two cents' worth goes along with a lot of others who agree that posting these two videos was well within the scope of the preservation context. Personally, I got a BIG kick out of seeing a live K-37 rounding the loop in Golden AND a 4-6-2 hauling a coal train in 2014!! Well done!!
