Hi All,

Reading online the works of Day, Bane, Porta, and Wardale as of late has sparked my interest in modern steam. I have always been a fan of the USATC engines and stumbled across s160 5820 in the UK that was fitted with a Lempor by the 5AT group. From all accounts the modification has been succesful. This sparked my curiousity as an s100 fan so I must ask after extensively searching the interwebs.

Are there any s100s (or JZ62s) running with a Lempor ejector currently?

And if so, how much improvement has been seen?

Preston- as far as I'm aware, there are no ex-US Army locomotives equipped with Lempors in the U.S.

Here's a link to information on the locomotive Preston referred to in his original post:

You can find quite a few recent videos of this engine on youtube.

Very interesting...I'm going to be even more interested in the measured performance.

Not to stir the pot here (ok, to totally stir the pot)...Preston - are you looking into a US Army steamer to run on the Colebrookdale - is that why you're asking? ;)

My interest stems from the fact that the US Army pumped out quite a few decently modern engines that saw service on pretty much every continent. I know the s160 saw extensive modifications in its various place of employment but the equally important s100 is often skipped over. I know about what the Southern Ry did for its USA class but that was mostly comfort mods for the crews.

Hi Preston...we have an S100 (0-6-0T for the uninitiated) in Duluth, GA that may see a few improvements when funding becomes available for its restoration.

Andrew,

I'd love to discuss the Georgia Power loco with you sometime. Shoot me an email Pjmcevoy91@gmail.com

While I believe #5820 is the only former US Army locomotive included, there may be some other steam locomotives with exhaust improvements on my page here:

Anyone heard any further updates on the performance of this loco?

The 5AT page hasn't been updated recently so there's nothing there. I may shoot an e-mail to the locomotive operators and see what they have to say. I'll post up if I hear from them.

Enjoyed the videos. Looks like they have hand bombing those coal burners down to an art. Very clean firing.
The 2-8-0 has a nice bark to it and a pretty whistle.

Especially given the fact that most of the British engine use the latch and the chain rather than air operated fire doors.

I'm in touch with the 5AT group regarding #5820. Apparently the locomotive and railway have been so busy since the restoration there hasn't been an opportunity to do any formal testing. The general consensus is that the locomotive is an excellent steamer, much better than it was prior to the overhaul and Lempor installation.

They promise additional info including first-hand accounts from the drivers and firemen which I'll pass along as soon as I receive.
