Davenport hand brake configuration is quite different from Porter. I copied these images from Davenport Parts book. Sorry, I don't have any clear photos to show where parts go although brake shoes were hung in front of the wheels. Porter they were between.

On the Ford Museum engine I don't see a hand brake. There is a steam brake valve in the cab but no hand brake.

All you see in the Ford museum shots is the Johnson bar, or forward reverse lever. No hand brake.

Porter did include a hand brake lever, looking much like a Johnson bar, on their fireless locomotives. I owned one such locomotive some years back and it would make some sense to have a hand brake on a fireless as once you ran out of steam you really had no way to stop.

In our case, the locomotive had one centrally mounted, horizontal steam brake cylinder. It attached to the brake rigging via a slotted shaft so that the cylinder or hand lever could be used independently (a little hard to describe in writing here).

This is the only application of a hand brake I have seen on a Porter anyway.

Do you have two brake cylinders (one on each side) or one down the middle? I do have a drawing which I would be happy to mail to you if it would help.

Under the front of the tank you can see the cylinder and the various slotted rods for the hand brake as I mentioned previously. As a side note, Burton #1 (shown in the picture) is now Apache #5 and running in Ohio. Burton #2 became Apache #6 and is back in Arizona for display after spending a few years running in NJ.

No where did I say the Davenport at the Ford museum had a hand brake. I could have posted photos of the Porter configurations but that was not the question. Anyone else is welcome to post photos of Davenport locomotives with hand brakes.

Thanks for all your help with this, The loco has the steam brake under the cab on the right hand side. With 6 of us on it full time its coming on very quickly. The drawings of the brake components will be a great help will be able to make something up that looks and works right. When the frames are fimmished i will post some photos. but keep posting it makes intesting reading.
