Just a few blocks from Exchange Place and across the street from the WALDO artist district, the huge brick structure with its three black steel smokestacks dominated the waterfront landscape for decades and is a singular reminder of Jersey CityÂ’s industrial past. The building boom of the last few years has changed this area dramatically as empty lots sprout high rises and older buildings make way for new office towers. Amid the change, the artists want to remind us all that some things are worth preserving and that in the rush for the new we should be careful not to destroy what we might later regret. In photography, painting, sculpture and drawing the artists call attention to this building and what it means to us now and might mean for future generations. Elise Knudson and her dancers will come from Brooklyn to perform at the opening while a local group, Friends of Harry, will provide the music.
