<P>has anyone found a good mechancial engineer to recalculate the boiler for the new form 4's required by January 13, 2001 to get in under the new regs? A guy willing to donate his expertise would be great!, but, how about someone willing to work with us? Any leads?<br>

<P>There are some very qualified people like Dave Conrad and Bob Yuill who aren't PEs but can do fine Form 4 work. Hume Kading is a PE and is working on his first Form 4 calcualtions. All the above are recommended.<p>Dave<br>

<P>Actually, Bob's using a PE in the northeast (name escapes me, not fully caffeinated yet) who many of the other groups (including Steve Lee of UP) are using as well.<p>My STRONG recommendation: get the work done as early as possible. There's going to be a huge glut of work planned after the 2001 season to prepare for the 2002 season. I'd even suggest writing a check to someone now to ensure your place in line.<p>And don't think this is just a pro-forma excercise. Even if all your sheets are full thickness, even if you have no brittle material, you may find that the original Form 4 can't be justified. Some locos are requiring additional bracing, some a completely new steam dome or other modifications to maintain the existing MAWP. I even heard one story about a loco whose Form 4 didn't match the boiler AT ALL!<p>JAC<br>

<P>Alan:<p>The easiest source for the Form 4, is to go to John Craft's Steam Central Site and Download the Adobe Acrobat Version (PDF) File that is the zipped file. You will need a copy of pkunzip.exe to unzip it; as well as, a copy of Adobe Acrobat to read the file.<p>When you unzip the file, you will have a complete copy of the revised rule for 49 CFR Part 230 as it was published in the Federal Register. The Form 4 is towards the end of the file.<p>Going to the Steam Central site is quite a bit easier than going through the federal Government GPO site.<p>P. Kurilecz<br>
