Are there any new updates on the restoration of #28? It seems there was not a lot of money that needed to be raised to complete the restoration.

Nothing to report at this time on D&NE 28, she remains in Cloquet, under cover and under restoration.

Her predecessor is in the shop right now being painted though:

Nick -

This would be Duluth & Northern Minnesota 2-8-2 #14, built by Baldwin in 1913. Later became Lake Superior & Ishpeming #22 until renumbered as LS&I 14. Sold to Inland Lime & Stone in 1959, keeping the number 14. Donated in 1981 to Lake Superior Transportation Museum in Duluth, Minnesota. Was used in service by LSTM on the North Shore Scenic Railroad until replaced by leased Soo Line 4-6-2 #2719.

Thanks for the photo! The Mike really looks great!

Yep, that's her, although there was an 8 year gap between #14's withdrawal from service in 1998 and #2719 entering service in 2006.

Here's a video from one of her last runs:

I watched the video and was surprised to see that the 28 has Walschaerts gear on slide valves. I love locomotives from the 1905-1915 era. The technology was changing so fast and there are so many unusual combinations of valve gear that were tried. At Mid-Continent, our C&NW Class R-1 No. 1385 has Stephenson gear driving piston valves located above but inboard of the cylinders. But the C&NW had other R-1 class locomotives with other combinations including slide valves with Stephenson gear, slide valves with Walschaerts gear like the D&NE 28 and the more usual combination of piston valves over the cylinders driven by Walschaerts gear.

Think you might mean Duluth & Northern Minnesota #14 has Walschaerts valve gear on slide valves. Duluth & Northeastern 28 has Stephenson gear on pistons over the cylinders, but with a slight inward cant:

Don't worry, I encounter lots of people who confuse the two.

How many of the locomotives from the Lake Superior & Ishpeming to survive have been steamed in recent years? Seems like it would be a very high percentage.

D&NM 14 always reminds me of an EBT Mikado on steroids (although having lived in Duluth long before I ever visited Orbisonia, for me it's more like the EBT Mikes remind me of narrow gauge D&NM 14's). Same builder, wheel arrangement, and driver diameter, similar vintage. Nice to see her getting some love. Hard to believe it has been over 22 years since her return to steam, and more than 15 now since her last run.

Quick question; WHY was the 14 withdrawn from service back in 1998? Thanks.

My understanding is that the locomotive needed boiler work by '98. The locomotive was used extensively in the filming of the movie "Iron Will" as well as several off line excursions. The restoration shop the locomotive is currently being painted in wasn't built until 2000, and by that time the new FRA regulations made the cost of restoration more than the museum wanted to take on at the time.

Duluth & Northeastern 28 is now safely back at the Lake Superior Railroad Museum in Duluth after a ferry move from Cloquet today. Pics and videos will (I'm sure) be coming soon.
