I'd like to change my email address but the system won't let me use my new address.

What's that all about?

Wild guesses.

1. Anti-spam measure. Forums, wikis, and other sites which publicly display User Generated Content (UGC sites) are constant targets for spammers, wingnuts etc. UGC sites shoot back by requiring a valid email address tied to an employer or business relationship ( @comcast.net. etc.) rather than the throwaway Yahoo and Hotmail accounts.

2. Disallowed characters in email addresses. Consider the following email address: joe@blow.com'; DELETE TABLE users; That extra bit on the end is called an SQL injection attack. The deadly ' prematurely ends the intended command and sneaks in another. (pretty lame that such a thing can even work.) Anyway, forums protect themselves by disallowing tainted characters, or disallowing ALL but blessed characters: A-Z, a-z, 0-9 and whatever else the programmer thinks of. That being phpBB in this case. Programmers often overlook characters users need.

Even lamer when the outsourced tech squad in Bangalore can't figure out how to render legitimate closed single quote characters in text and you get the dreaded &quot ... only for the character in that trailing position. Note that it would be comparatively simple just to say 'it's too hard to separate the two, so always use full quotation marks when quoting something'. But that would involve humility, common sense, and a spirit of putting users first ... none of which are characteristic of all too many of the present generation of coder wannabees.

Ok, because I'm losing my email accounts of the last 7 and 14 years and moving over to a non-ISP based email provider that doesn't hold my email addresses hostage, and would like to use those addresses, rather than the stop-gap email address that I had to use since my new email addresses aren't acceptable to the RYPN system.

But, is there anyone on the board who takes care of these things?

I can certainly try. PM me with details, okay?
