Meiningen used to be in East Germany, and all the goes with being in a communist country. That usually lent towards machines that need a lot of constant maintenance. Just like a MIG fight plane could require ten times the amount of work that a Western-made fighter plane would require in the same timeframe,
I wonder if they're just used to making boilers that need to be rebuilt often, whereas you wouldn't expect the same from a boiler made in another country.
I'm not saying either way, just wondering as I know for sure that plenty of other DDR-made stuff often needed a great deal of skinned knuckles...

And the 3801's boiler is now.......returning to New South Wales, so the Australian experts can complete the repairs to Australian standards.

So......what was going on in Germany for the past few months?

I did not read the 3801 link but have an eyewitness account that the boiler was still in Meiningen, Germany as recently as August 2014.
