The balancing E8A!

Along Rt. 20, outside of Albany, there is an E8A, sitting on one truck and balanced on a cement wall. No prime mover, no traction motors, gutted, apparently an office building.

Anybody familiar with this relic?

According to the databases at RR Picture Archives, this was:
MBTA 4262(E8A) (ended up as a parts supply, late 1970s/early 1980s)
PC 4262(E8A)
PRR 4262(E8A)
PRR 5762(E8A)

NYC "4097" is supposedly two numbers above the highest-numbered real NYC E8A, 4095; remember that "NYC 4096" is the former UP E8 masquerading at the Railroad Museum of New England. What this loco did between the MBTA shops at Billerica and this spot, I don't know.

Apparently was supposed to be turned into an ice cream shop. Certainly could be a stop for visiting railfans if it could compete with the Stewart's at the west end of Selkirk yard.

Just noticed the 6 portholes per side. Now, there's a record that will probably never be broken!

The ex-UP E-unit Has not been part of the RMNE's collection for quite some time. It resides with the Danbury RR museum in Danbury CT.

The "NYC 4096" was/is UP 912A for you E-unit trainspotters who keep track of those things.

The Danbury unit is exUP E9A 912, which was one of the last E units built. It was part of an order for 3 (912-914). They were not built in number order, so it's a toss-up whether it or one of the other 2 was the last one. Some sources say 913 was actually the last one.

What's left of exUP 914 was someplace in the New Orleans area last I heard.
