Sounds like she is worn out beyond worn out and 40 years of display hasn't helped her any either

Good for Jerry. Nothing against 1293 but I look forward to when/if he starts restoring some of his other engines.

I'm curious as to whether the Age of Steam Roundhouse does a report on the condition of its locomotives. Something like what Steamtown did with its locomotive collection a number of years ago. So that when a locomotive like B&O 390/1190 is added to the roster, it is recorded as a candidate for cosmetic restoration only, or as a future restoration possibility. Just wondering.

That 0-6-0 probably is in much better shape then she looks - in fact, she doesn't look too bad at all. Just some pieces likely removed and stored.

Now - you wanna see a loco in bad shape, check out PRR 0-6-0 #60 in Hockessin, DE on a siding of the Wilmington and Western Railroad.

Interesting that there are two B&O switchers, didn't realize that. Call me nuts, I'd like to see one at the B&O RR Museum just to see more B&O at the B&O Museum.

What is the other one? Anyways, is the tender missing to this thing, or is it separated. Also, could someone post a picture of 1190 at Sugarcreek? Until about 5 mins ago, I had no idea this beautiful engine existed. That doesn't happen to me often!

The 1190 arrived at our shop on four separate truck loads in November. After some minor repairs to the running gear and frame, the boiler was remounted and the tender reconnected so we can make her mobile again. The engine has now been placed in the roundhouse. At this time we have no plans for 1190 other then protection, account of the work taking place on the other locomotives and shop machinery. She is a welcome addition to the collection, we are glad to have acquired her.

You can never tell from a simple photo, but from what little I can see, "Basket case" is hardly the phrase I would use for this 0-6-0, so far!

I would concur. I saw the locomotive when it was in New Martinsville, W.Va. At that time there was more there--but what was missing then and is missing now is stuff that is "relatively" (note the quotes!) easy to replace, i.e, air compressor, injectors, and so on. All the unique or not so easily replaced stuff was still there, including main rods, the suspension system, and all of the Stephenson valve gear.

Speaking of the Stephenson gear, how many preserved locomotives, operational or not, have this configuration of Stephenson valve gear and inboard piston or spool valves? It was fairly common in new construction early in the 20th century, but I don't think it was a construction style that lasted very long. If my memory is right from looking at this locomotive, it also lacks the rocker arms common to Stephenson motion and slide valves on top of the cylinders.

Edit: Some other locomotives that used this inboard piston valve setup with Stephenson gear included C&NW R-1 4-6-0s (1385 and 444 are two survivors, and I think there is a third), C&NW 1015 (a 4-4-2 at St. Louis), and another 4-4-2 (a former NYC "Gibson girl" at that!) at the Henry Ford Museum.

And if you want to see a steam locomotive that looks really bad, check out the 1015:

Now, as to our ex-B&O, ex-BR&P switcher, let's hope the surgeons at Sugar Creek find her boiler sound. . .

This engine needs to get all it's parts. Looks in good shape. I can see clearly why the tender was put into storage. No problem though, m&nf 12 (southern 1643) looked much worse when JJJ received it, and you can see she is clearly restore able.

There are four NP class S-4 4-6-0's in preservation that have this feature--this includes the 1364 which is nearing operation after restoration by the Yakima Valley Rail and Steam Museum in Toppenish Washinton.
