Good news for all of you high-hood fans-NS 3170, the Southerns' first SD40, is being overhauled at JLS. To be repainted in Southern colors- destined for an unknown museum.

Dave

Not only is NS donating it, but according to NSdash9.com:

"NS 3170, the first Southern Railway EMD SD40, is being donated by NS and will be preserved at a museum. Repair work on the 3170 is currently underway at Altoona to replace its blown engine and get it back to running condition again. It had been in storage since it was retired back in 2007. NS will also repaint the unit back into the Southern Railway tuxedo scheme"

you know when they get done, this unit will be almost new.

Really, really happy to be an NS stockholder.

The same source reports that N&W's first high-hood SD40, 1580, is also set aside for eventual preservation/donation, though no destination or restoration plans have yet been announced.

Could NS 3170 become a real heritage unit in service?

Nobody, especially the sources based out of Altoona, is suggesting that this loco is being restored/repaired for anything but museum donation.

Now, if they'd only rescue that former CNJ EMD (upgraded to an SD40-2 by Conrail) and do the same, instead of shipping it off to CSX as trade fodder for the SD80MAC's.

Once that unit goes to CSX, it is as good as gone. It will probably get a new cab, and all sorts of other modifications.

I know CSX and FURX have the other former CNJ SD40's, but the NS one probably stood the best chance of getting preserved unscathed. Even as the last active CNJ unit (I believe) on the NS roster, if 3063 had been painted into "Red Baron" colors prior to Conrail, I could see a good case for someone approaching Mr. Moorman about pulling that unit for donation.

Can't see NS preserving a B&O blue locomotive ... ;-)

CNJ 3063 was never painted in the Red "Coastguard" Scheme. The only Ex-B&O SD40 to receive the scheme was the 3067. CNJ 3067 is currently in storage as EMDX 2820.

As far as I can gather, the 3063 was only in painted out B&O blue, with the statue logo upon the nose and cab.

It might be more worthwhile to grab one of the Ex-PRR SD40s. I don't think there are many SD45s from the PRR left, so those SD40s are some of the latest surviving examples of PRR Diesels... It would be nice to see any of them saved from the SD40-3 treatment though.

NS 3170 has been repainted, and is NOT going to a museum. NS has pressed the locomotive out of retirement and into service. (It is the Only unrebuilt SD40 in class 1 service now?) Hats off to NS, and I hope the 1580 gets this treatment as well.

So why was it said earlier that it was going to a museum? Even so, it is a BEAUTIFUL engine, thank you to Norfolk Southern for all their work in the Heritage environment, from steam to diesel it is greatly appreciated!

Definitely Wonderful Job by NS on restoring SOU 3170 back to service. Hopefully it will in service behind 611 & 4501 this summer for any of the 21st Steam Trips.

I would assume that since she's assigned to the Piedmont div, it will wind up assisting 611 with dynamic breaking on break in runs, then will provide assistance behind the 611 on her early runs.
