Hi All

I am looking for information on Worthington feed water heaters. Are there any preserved locomotives that have a Worthington Type B Feed Water Heater installed. I need to get the basic dimensions.

I finely found a picture of the engine I would like to model in 1 1/2" scale. Can someone tell me what size heater is installed?

Thanks

Tim

There is at least one or two Great Northern steam engines preserved that have this type of FWH. I believe one is a northern and one is a pacific

GN P2 4-8-2 #2523 has one and is located in Willmar, MN http://www.gngoat.org/steam.htm

I was wrong about the pacific I was thinking of and this is what I had thought was a northern.

A quick search on google shows that the Sp 2472 has one, Sp 5021 has one, Sp 982 has one, Sp (TNO) 975 has one, Lsi 35 has one, Lsi 34 has one, Lsi 33 has one, Lsi 24 has one, Lsi 23 has one, Lsi 22 has one, Lsi 20 has one, Lsi 19 has one, Lsi 18 has one, Baldwin 60000 has one, Nw 2156 has one

I am sure there are more

Tim -

I believe former Chicago, Burlington & Quincy 2-8-2 #4960 had this type feed water heater, but I think I recall that it was removed when the Grand Canyon Railway rebuilt the Mikado. But sister CB&Q #4963, which is located at Illinois Railway Museum, should still have hers.

LS&I 18 (now SLRG 18) no longer has it's Worthington FWH. It was removed and an injector was installed. The space on the side of the boiler was filled with an additional air compressor.

LS&I 33 has a Worthington BL, not type B as the OP was requesting info on. They are similar, but if the OP wants exact dimensions on a B, the BL may not be so useful.

LSI #34 / WMSR #734 had the FWH removed during it's rebuilding in Ridgeley, WV at the WMSR. The FWH was on the front of the locomotive............

Nope. BL feedwater heater was mounted in the middle of the fireman's side running board, displacing the cross compound air pump which was moved to the engineer's side pilot, replacing the ladder.

In the later rebuild for the WMSR the FWH was removed and the air pump moved back to the side of the engine.

Thanks for the help.

From the pictures I have found online CB&Q #4963 appears to have a Type B Feed Water Heater of the same size. Unfortunately I live in Florida so I am not close to any of the large collections of steam locomotives.

Does anyone have contact information to someone that would be able to get details of the Feed Water Heater at the Illinois Railway Museum?

Thanks

Tim

Hi Pat

Yes, I have the drawings from Roger. They help but are for a BL2 pump. I need to verify the dimensions on the Type B pump.
