The pic of the Southern Pacific drop-bottom gon (link) posted by Brian Norden (different thread) forced me to bump this thread.

Say you have one car like this in your collection, as Orange Empire does. What better way to illustrate it in service than by having a train of, say, 30 of these cars in your model rail yard. Then the museum docent or guide can explain how there were long trains or blocks of these cars and tell all about sugar beet traffic.

If your museum's region is California, similar demo model trains could represent reefer blocks from the famed Central Valley, or Trona (for soda ash) from the mines, or mixed carloads from the ports. Tons of educational potential there to demonstrate RR's role in the regional economy. And of course you'd need a Santa Fe Chief at your model depot (that goes without saying).

Anyone modeling preserved equipment stored outdoors?

Daniel Kohlberg's latest decal announcement will be of interest: Pigeon Droppings #2 SE-11 $4.00

what can be a real problem with model railroad displays at museums it that few if any people take ownership of them. Many times, the person who spearheads such displays either dies off or loses interest, and no one takes over. The display falls into disrepair or gets dirty, then looks unsightly.

Sadly, many model railroaders are "freelancers" who put stuff on a layout just because they like it. Forget historical context! Putting billboard reefers on a '50's layout because they look neat, for example. I've also seen double stacks pulled by GE Dash 8's and SD 60's on a layout that is supposed to model a Conrail "Fallen Flag" because one of the members likes that stuff.

A very prominent HO layout was at the Franklin Institute, and in the 1950's they would announce that the layout would be running, but they never seemed to be able to get it to work! I think the one time I saw it working, it was with a speeding Varney dockside all by itself.
