Well - the cat's out of the bag - if any of ya have been on Facebook lately, so I guess it's OK to post this here now:

The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania in co-ordination with both the Strasburg Rail Road, the City of Altoona and Norfolk Southern have confirmed rumors of an on-going, once secret project to restore to operation, the Museum's PRR 4-4-2 #460. Lot's of progress has been made under the radar with an original plan that would've seen #460 completed late this Summer and moved under tarp to Harrisburg where the first of several NS excursions were to commenced initiating the start of NS's Fall steam excursion schedule. The plan remains the same, though now that the secret is out, PRR #460 will first make a series of runs in late September at the Strasburg Rail Road with funds going towards restoration of Long Island Rail Road (LIRR) G5s Steam Locomotive #39. Afterwards, in late October, PRR #460 will run one round trip to Philadelphia (to Abrams Yard, actually) and then proceed to Harrisburg for the planned series of trips over the Susquehanna Bridge in November. Finally, PRR #460 will make one final excursion in 2015 to Altoona (patrons will be bussed back) where she will housed in the "new" roundhouse at the Railroaders Memorial Museum. The Altoona Museum has finalized plans to run excursions utilizing #460 on local host railroads for at least the next ten years with NS offering to assist at n/c all the required moves.

The Lindbergh Engine

The Museum's Restoration Department is now applying its skills to No. 460. This wonderful engine requires very extensive work to cosmetically restore it to its working appearance and stabilize it for future generations.

Work started in 2010 and if I recall correctly, was hope - hoped - to be completed
early this year. Patrons of a Lerro Photo charter at the Museum were invited to see the progress of the engine some time back. As part of the charter crew, I was not able to but got an invite to return at a later date which I took advantage of. Those photos are from 2013, I believe.

Real question: Where is this engine really from? What piqued my curiosity is the screw-actuated reverse mechanism. Could the actual origin of the locomotive be in the Great White North? Or did PRR, in its typical non-standard way go in for screw reverse rather than the more common "Johnson bar"?

Several roads, including NYC, favored screw reverse for some applications, particularly some engines (and the E6s was one) that never got power reverse.

Now, in regard to the real "subject," it would indeed be awesome to see the 460 run again, and it might not be too impractical, either; the E6s was a notably potent 4-4-2, capable of 2,400 horsepower. It's very much a smaller version of the K4s, and shares a number of components with the larger engine. There are reports of these 4-4-2s handling trains up to 11 or 13 cars (plain bearing heavyweights to boot) on what is now the Northeast Corridor.

Thanks for the info--my experience with 4-4-2 engines was many years ago, when the Santa Fe used them to haul the San Bernardino Local, Train 42 through my home town of Monrovia CA. This was usually a three-car consist, RPO, Railway Express baggage car, and a coach for the few passengers who weren't taking the Pacific Electric trains. By the late 1940s, steam-generator equipped GP-7s had taken over, and the last service was provided with an all-in-one "doodlebug" motor car, ending around 1955.

Nice to see another engine joining the NS 21st Century Steam roster. Hopefully, this is REAL/TRUE (Sees April Fool's Date).

I think many railfans, especially those from Pennsylvania had wanted one of their own PRR steamers joining NS Steam Ranks, especially when NKP 765 did Horseshoe Curve.
