OUTSTANDING !!!! How truly excellent, it's enough to make me think there's actually some justice in the world. The red paint wasn't my idea in the first place. Not only would Mr. Morrison approve of her proper paint and lettering and NUMBER, he would also approve of the clear stack. After all, they aren't called SMOKE locomotives, they don't put SMOKE gauges on 'em, so you can keep track of your SMOKE pressure.... or so he told me. Right now, he's riding the Big Rock Candy Mountain with a smile on his face.

Dare I hope to see 500 and 201 get the same treatment ???

I believe 201 ex T&P 316 is back in her original number and T&P paint. I really respect the Texas State Railroad for putting their locomotives back into their original paint schemes, 28 is a beaut

Well, OK then, would somebody please post a foto of a fresh painted T&P 316 ??? (Don't bother if it has a bunch of chokingly thick, nauseatingly overdone, hokey looking fake, smoke.)

Thanks in advance...

Hi Guys;

This is one of SPL 28's sisters that ended up in France. From a photo taken at Jersey City, NJ, in 1918, on loan from the USRA to the Central Railroad of New Jersey, U S Army #661 built by Baldwin. Only two other Pershings are left, one in Romania and the other in Green Bay, Wis, a tender from one still survives in France. Have fun - David Notarius, in the Cambridgeshire Fens - UK

the WWI army 2-8-0's are definitely better looking than the WWII version

I'm assuming you are comparing the WWI Consolidation to the so called S160s. There were actually two War Department 2-8-0s built during in WWII. 2120 of them were S160s. The S160 had 19 X 26 inch cylinders, 57 inch drivers, ran 225 psi, and weighed about 160,000 pounds. A slightly earlier Consolidation had 21 X 26 cylinders, 50 inch drivers, ran 210 psi, and weighed 180,000 pounds. The Alaska Railroad had 12 of the S160s (550 class) and six or the earlier Consolidation (500 class, later changed to 400 class). Comparing boiler blue prints leads me to believe that the earlier consolidation was more expensive and took more time to produce, based on the large difference in the number of flexible stays in the boiler. This may be the reason so many more S160s were built.

Some of the articles on the S160 suggest that the heavier Consolidation was a design exercise that was put on the shelf as a contingency, but they were actually built.

There is a photo and diagram of the ARR version of the larger locomotive at http://www.alaskarails.org/pix/former-loco/HV-402.html and my favorite locomotive at http://www.alaskarails.org/pix/former-loco/ARR-557.html
