I was recently informed that this engine was sold-does anybody know if true and if so, who acquired it?

No names named, but it's reportedly heading to "northeastern PA." Hmmm.

Whatever deal was being formulated last year fell through and she was sold to a scrap dealer in early February of this year. Just days before she was to be scrapped a private individual stepped in and purchased her outright from the scrapper. No more info until the move has taken place... or at least she's on the flatcar...

LNE 611 is now being scrapped. Alcoguy is correct that Emporia Grain sold it to a scrapper in February, but an individual bought it in late February from the scrapper, and was waiting for CSX to pick up the engine in July.

A couple weeks ago, the scrapper told the buyer said he wanted 40% more for the engine, despite a signed bill of sale and cashed check. He sent a the buyer's money back, and in collusion with Emporia Grain who wanted the engine out by May 1st, started cutting up an engine that was not his own.

The individual who bought the engine could sue, but its hard to fight two locals who are colluding together from another state. He has concluded its better to cash his check and look elsewhere rather than fight.

Its really sad that this engine is being cut up purely due to the greed of a scrapper and the rush of Emporia Grain to get the engine out of the way.

So apparently the many Internet reports of #611's demise were wrong?

There is a new Facebook page for the Lehigh Valley Chapter NRHS effort to bring her back to PA.

I have this nagging feeling that some overzealous central Pa. rail enthusiast heard about the (former?) existence of this loco, then rushed to set up a Facebook page (the latest form of "slacktivism," don't you know?) before actually confirming either the existence or scrapping of said loco.

Pray that a quarry is not soon mentioned.

I thought the same thing, Sandy, but a cursory bit of Googling during my commute this morning revealed photos of her dated long after the supposed scrapping. She does still show up on Google maps, though that is not always a good barometer given lags in imagery updates.

It would be a nice surprise given the history behind the preservation efforts to date.

I went to multiple aerial sources.

The Alco shows up on undated Google Maps Satellite, Google Earth, and Bing Bird's Eye views, but does NOT show up in a view up the tracks from the adjacent U.S. 36 crossing from a Google Street View car dated October 2013--only the replacement ex-Santa Fe loco is evident.

I'm not sure what this is supposed to say about the veracity of Brother Hunt's reporting.

Lesson: ALWAYS demand photographic proof (or the moral equivalent, like a report from someone there first-hand) of scrapping before writing off a mission.

Saw this thread and thought i would update everyone. LNE611 still exists, 100% intact as of two days ago when i drove over to Emporia and saw it parked just south of the elevator. It is owned by a scrapper who is well aware of it's historical significance and does not intend on scrapping it any time soon. Friction bearing trucks and no alignment control keeps it from being interchanged (if there was a buyer). Unit has a "weak" generator and small water leak. Needs Batteries. Air horn was stolen over a year ago, but otherwise a complete S2. I have contact info for SERIOUS BUYERS who are interested in saving the last LNE diesel in existence.....

Why not alert the Anthracite Roads Historical society? I think such a locomotive would definitely pertain to their collection. Also I think a similar thread was posted about an S2 with friction bearings in terms of transport.viewtopic.php?f=1&p=225718 One thing is for sure: LNE 611 should definitely return to PA as should 207 but we all know that won't happen soon.

Although I don't speak officially for ARHS, you may notice that they have been de-accessioning some of their collection recently in favor of the F3/F7b and possibly the FA-2
I heard that their plate is rather full with those items. I suspect that they're not in the market for another locomotive.

i heard that there may be some movement, if some people get their act (and not just their desire) together.

Your financial contribution will be well appreciated when an announcement is made. Can you be counted on?

And, the $crapper is aware of the hi$torical value of this unit. Read $$$$$.
