The flip side, Ross, is that even though fake personas are an issue on FB, it is not as prevalent a problem as other platforms and forums. You usually know who you are talking to.

Plus, you can tune out the garbage rather easily. When it comes to preservation, I get and give more valuable information via Facebook connections than I do via other digital sources (except, of course, direct texts). Why? Part of it is the ability to choose what you follow and part is that because of the ease of use a lot of projects/teams post more on FB than any other platform.

I get a lot of updates on interesting projects via Facebook, and have far more meaningful one on one preservation conversations, on FB than any other digital channel. And the random flame throwing, anonymous fools are much less of an issue. It is incredible the difference in tone when people use a legit profile.

And that's not to mention the marketing benefits...

I totally agree with the pro Facebook users, those who dont like it dont understand it and dont want to, these are the types who also dont encourage youngsters to get involved and volunteer and dont try to understand modern technology.
It works wonders for us as all our projects have their own page and we cross post and share with all sorts of other pages and groups, it does far far more than stale old RYPN ever could (and i believe we have told RYPN that but with zero results).
We are currently in talks with another museum who are closing due to the old stick in the mud, lack of foresight and young volunteer encouragement issues.....we shall be inheriting some very nice exhibits in the near future we hope.
See us on Facebook. Or not.

Wow, way to just loop people who don't think exactly like you into the worst connotations you can think of. I'm surprised you don't also say that non-facebook users worship the devil and/or do horrible things to little kids and puppies...
This kind of attitude comes from the type of person I refer to as a 'Facebook cultist', in that you like FB and you think anyone who doesn't has some kind of character flaw and must be some kind of horrible person or hermit.
It's hard for some FB users to accept, but there's a big world of people out there who aren't on it and understand the technology very well. But still, FB users who slam people who aren't on it are often only communicating with other FB users. Hence, the word cultist. They run in a very tight, FB-centric world.
Hey, FB does works for people, no question, but no one communication channel is the end all for everything. And FB cultists seem to forget that this kind of thing morphs over time. Remember when yahoo groups were 'it' for a lot of folks? Those days are slowly sliding past. FB will go there itself someday when something else comes along to replace it.
FB should never, EVER be your one channel for communication. If you use it, it should run parallel to the other means you use to get your message out.
Where FB users fail horribly is when they only post anything on FB and make it where you gotta, 'friend' them just to see any content at all. It's got to be easy for the casual person to just eyeball quickly. That's why your FB efforts should be backed by a website anyone can look at and other forms of communication.

I do believe we can now stop criticizing one another and random groups of people as well. Thread locked.
