So, absent any indication of the bolt or bolts being broken, are the caps in question being removed for any reason other than to satisfy curiosity?

Or will the bolts now be changed simply because of some rust?

I heard while I was up there they planned on replacing the entire Firebox and both tube sheets due to cinder cutting. That would explain the need to remove the old MK caps....since all the staybolts would have to be replaced along with the firebox.

If this is UP 844, how does one have "cinder cutting" on a oil-burning locomotive? Not trying to flame here, just curious.

I was referring to 4014, not 844. I apologies for the misunderstanding. I did not see any MK caps cut off the 844, though she only has a few here and there. I would imagine the tool is more for 4014 rather then 844, though it can also be used on 844 if it is needed. I asked about the 5 year cap inspection, I was told that since the staybolts have telltale holes, they do not need a cap inspection since the MK caps are welded on.

"both flue sheets" from cinder cutting. Rear one yeh front one nah. Whole firebox??... we'll see I guess. The UT, which hasn't happened, will speak to the scope of the firebox work required.

As for cinder cutting on the rear one, 611 just got her first replacement rear sheet - the first one had 21 years of service. If 4014 has her original rear sheet it has 18 years of service.

Flexi bolts seldom fail for us. The majority of flexis we have replaced have been due to failure of the male threads on the old D sleeves due to corrosion. We replaced all of them on #90 with UW sleeves, A caps, Teflon gaskets and drilled bolts, and we won't be removing those caps again in my remaining time.

Mr. Anderson,
What thickness of teflon material do you use for the gaskets? Thanks very much.......mld
