Hello, Paul Krueger and all.

1. Paul, do you (or any of you reading) have a copy of Wayner's book on hand? If so, would you be willing to look and see where else Mt Harvard shows up? I would be interested in any MILW service prior to May 1951, and any service between May 1951 and January 1954.

2. Tom Madden has generously researched Mt Harvard's commercial career. It was painted in MILW colors at MILW expense on May 18, 1951. It held one or more assignments of varying lengths between then and January 1953, when its commercial career ended. At that time, it was placed into long-term storage. It was initially stored at Pullman's St Louis shops, and later moved to the Terre Haute Ordnance Depot. The government finally authorized Mt Harvard for scrapping in 1961.

3. I intend to get a copy of Wayner's book from my local library. But it will be an inter-library loan, and will take time to come in once I get the time to order it.

Thanks.

Brian J. Patterson.

5. As to why the Milwaukee Road never purchased the car, I can only guess that the Milwaukee Road had use for the car but didn't want to buy it, and that Pullman didn't want the car back. Those details are likely "in the stacks" at the Newberry, and may also be at IRM's Pullman Library. While I intend to find them, I haven't looked yet.

While visiting the Newberry Library on another project today, I had some time to look into this matter. According to a file on "Pullman Standard Cars Assigned General Service Pool" (call # 05/02/03 Box 22 Folder 422), the car was offered for sale to the Southern Pacific. When it hadn't sold as of 12/31/1948, it was placed in the General Service Pool.

There is another memo in a different file regarding disposition of the car in 1961. While I didn't have time to pull the memo itself, the finding guide entry indicates that the car was donated by Pullman rather than sold for scrap.

That offer for sale to the SP essentially proves the car was assigned to the SP as of 1/1/45, as the agreement forming the new Pullman Sleeping Car Co. spelled out that each car would only be offered to whatever railroad it was assigned to on that date.

Looks like the cars career on the MILW was rather short.

But it is a nice paint scheme.

Made another research trip to the Newberry Library today. Had time to pull the file (Pullman 05/01/02 Box 3 Folder 72) on Pullman's disposition of car Mt. Harvard. The car was donated to Wabash Frisco and Pacific Association with a disposition date of June 5, 1961. At the time, it was in government storage in Terre Haute, IN.

Hello, all.

1. Roger Kramer posted a Mt Harvard update on the blog section of the IRM Website. He reports in part... "An opportunity for supporting the acquisition of the Mt. Harvard has been graciously offered to IRM by the Milwaukee Road Historical Association. Earlier this month President Bob Storozuk came out to IRM for a visit. He met with Nick Kallas, Paul Cronin and myself to discuss an idea he wanted to share with us. Here is his idea. The Milwaukee Road Historical Association, better known as MRHA, would like to help with the cost of moving the Mt. Harvard from the Mid Continent Railroad Museum, to the Irm campus. Speaking for the MHRA, in which he is the President, he offered to match any Mt. Harvard donations sent to Irm on a ONE:ONE basis. In other words, for every dollar sent in for the Mt. Harvard, his organization would also send in one dollar up to a total of $10,000.00. What a generous offer!! There is a time limit to this offer and it expires August 31, 2015."

2. Thank you to the MRHA for this truly generous offer. And thank you in advance, gentle-readers for any money you are able to donate to the cause. For directions on how to donate, please read the original message in this thread. Any money raised above and beyond moving the Mt Harvard to Union will be spent on the continuing restoration of Mt Harvard.

3. Thank you, Peter Nicholson, for your research in clarifying who donated Mt Harvard to the WF&P.

Thanks.

Brian J. Patterson.

I'm going to come back to this early bit for a moment;

They also used them between Tacoma, WA and Othello, WA when the train went over the Cascades in the daylight, but discontinued the practice when the schedule was changed and the train started to run through there at night in both directions. The open air cars were rebuilt from older passenger cars in 1921.

Whatever happened to these open cars? I would assume that they all got either scrapped (Or burned and left for the vultures. Let's face it, not much scrap value in wood.)... Better yet, are there even any surviving specs on those cars?

Good news. The MRHA seems to really have its act together.

Hello, all.

1. Just a quick update on our progress with Mt Harvard. The Wisconsin DOT had started rebuilding every highway leading out of the North Freedom Area right after the auction. The Mt Harvard was not the only sold item delayed in shipment. However, this "bought" us needed time to raise specific funds to move Mt Harvard to Union; time which has been put to good use.

2. We have received numerous individual donations for Mt Harvard's move and preservation. The MRHA, in addition to their publicity help, has donated a check for $10,300. We anticipate moving Mt Harvard to Union in early to mid October, once the roads between North Freedom and Union are usable for large heavy trucks.

3. However, YOUR help (if you are so inclined, and haven't yet contributed,) is still truly needed. In addition to ensuring that the Mt Harvard does not have to tap into the IRM Passenger Car Department's (always seemingly scarce) general funds for its move to Union, we want to build up the car's restricted fund to allow a quicker start for major tasks on the car, such as brake work, repainting, etc. YOUR donation will help with this. Mt Harvard still hasn't been added to the IRM Online Store. However, checks, money orders, etc are always welcome. For instructions on how to donate, please read the first message in this topic. Thank you for your continued support of the Mt Harvard.

Thanks.

Brian J. Patterson.

The Mt Harvard is finally enroute to IRM. Loading at Mid-Continent started yesterday, but was stalled because the two cranes sent yesterday didn't have enough lifting capacity to get Mt Harvard onto its tractor and dolly. Today, that problem was solved, and Mt Harvard is now enroute to Union. It will arrive there later this evening. Off-loading of the trucks and other stuff from their trailer is being performed by Mark Secco with our smaller operational cranes. We expect the Mt Harvard to be placed back on its trucks at Union Monday of next week. Thanks to all for your support, and thank you in advance for your continued support of Mt Harvard.
