The South American was cut up in 1992 - a sad end to a fine ship, but she was pretty far gone after all those years she spent rotting away in Camden.

Speaking of lake boats on the coast, is the hull of the old crane ship Cambria still in Norfolk? Last I heard she was being used as a transfer barge down there. I hear there is also a plan to bring the Bob-lo steamer Columbia to New York for service on the Hudson - does anyone know what organization is involved there?

And finally, if anyone could post (or e-mail) a photo of this mystery ship in Richmond, I'd be really interested in seeing it.

That would actually be Niew Amsterdam II, no matter what they really call it. Since the original went to the breakers years ago.

Yep and the Niew Amsterdam III sister Noordam, and the Niew Amsterdam latter became the Patriot for United States Lines a subsideary for Delta Queen Steam Boat Company owner of the Independence. In October 2001 she was given back to her original owners HAL and revirted back to her former name and is now chartered to Thomson Cruises as the "Thomson Spirit" Not bad for a 19 year old lol rite?

As Johnny Carson used to say with a surprised look..."I did not know that!"
