They will have to do very careful work excavating, buildup of methane would have to be vented out, if there is live ammunition on it, they could run into a heap of problems, you would need explosive specialists working. Nobody should just run and jump and try to hit it any way they wanna. They should be ready for anything.

This is generating a lot of methane so far, and no real information. All we can do is wait until somebody digs into the tunnel or the documentation. Probably the tunnel is the easier job.

I recall about 30 years ago, the urban myth of a flight of 2 B17s and 5 P38s having been forced down on a Greenland glacier and were lost during WWII.

One fellow here in Atlanta followed the trail and found the planes quite a distance from the landing location (moved by the glacier) and something like 1000 feet below the glacier top. It took several years to recover and return it to flying condition. It was so expensive he went bankrupt and lost the P38. I know there were plans (never put into action) to recover some of the other planes.

There was no photographic evidence of the planes before the first expedition was sent.

My preservation incident concerning the WWII aircraft has a railroad equivelent I'd forgotten about.

About 10 years ago, some ship wreck divers found two 2-2-2s brand new from what turned out to probably be the pre-Civil War era.

No records pointed to this. They were looking for a more modern (maybe WWII) era wreck that was not found.

I will put forth the myth of a PRR loco in a quarry in Pennsylvania. My uncle (died in 1997 - told me the story about 1980-85) saw the loco in the flooding quarry. His story is hearsay due to the lack of being able to interview him now. Items like this are how myths might occur. Maybe I mis-remember.

Divers have tried to go down in the quarry but they have never been able to gain permission from the feds - I think it is due to the poor water visibility and the sharpes that might be in the quarry.

I wonder if a submersable with sonar might be allowed?

Just for people who want to see what a real, preserved, German armoured train from WW2 looks like, this is the diesel powered version at the Warsaw Railway Museum.
I believe there were two diesel trains such as this manfactured, if I remember the information boards at the Museum correctly, but there were various other steam powered versions as well.

Say what? There were plenty of photos taken of those B-17s and P-38s on the ice before the crews were rescued from the ice.

I found this shot in 3 seconds on Google (yes, I timed it). There were several others, including a B-17 from the air.

the difference between a mystery train and these planes is that the planes were very well know, documented and photographed (not to mention all the reports that still exist). The only wild cards for recovering them was their exact location due to moving ice and what condition they were going to be in when found. One B-17 was found, but it'd been squashed flat.

It's not really an update, just someone saying he believes it due to a 'deathbed confession' from a person whom nobody will name.
This whole took a left turn at crazy a long time ago and is heading into territory usually reserved for publications like, "Made Magazine" and "The Onion".
I can't believe anyone is taking this seriously at this point. Right now, it's not even good enough to be called an urban legend!

Good point. This is the example of how an actual incident might become a myth. I thought I had it recalled correctly and did not check before posting. I did not think I needed to. I was wrong.

That is my point though, almost all myths start from truth and still have a grain of truth in there somewhere. As in this example where I was incorrect in the details, I recalled enough of it that you were able to ferret out the actual facts.
