If it's there, I'm sure there is plenty not being shared with the press...

The train itself apparently was found today, this photo proves it!

Better still, they found a dramatic color shot taken in 1944:

Seriously, on the radio this morning, I heard part of an interview with a woman from the local historical society there. She laughed at the idea, saying she's heard the stories all her life but that she thinks it's all nonsense.
They are, however, very worried that someone might get hit by a train as there's a spot rumored to be the place these guys are talking about, very close to a busy active main line...

weren't there other hidden trains already discovered?

You would have to think what the Nazis were doing, stealing off treasures from the other countries, building all these hidden tunnels, you have to think what would YOU do, go hide your stash, maybe you can get it later....

you would most likely cover your tracks the best you could, take the tracks away, bulldoze the entrance, or TNT rubble to cover it.

I was talking to a co-worker who's interested in the Nazi stuff, no he's not that kind of guy.
Stolen paintings might not do well in such an environment, they might deteriorate if not kept in a museum atmosphere and watched and cared for.

The only one that springs to mind - and that wasn't "hidden" as such, was a train containing various historic airframes from the former Berlin Aviation Museum. They were shipped out of Berlin during the war to avoid Allied bombing raids (in covered rail cars) and ended up in one of the chunks of German territory that became western Poland postwar.
The Poles found the cars containing the fuselages and a collection of aero engines, but the wings were never found - presumably they were destroyed in the fighting.
The airframes & engines (mainly pre 1918 aircraft) are now on display at the Krakow Aviation Museum.

Not Nazi,

but if I recall correctly, there is a railroad (B&O?) tunnel in Baltimore that goes through a ridgeline and had both ends sealed up decades ago. Supposedly a loco and a couple of cars are stilling the tunnel. In the past 15-20 years, the one end started to collapse (I think due to development onthe ridge).

A movement to at least acheologically examine the site was started but the tunnel was in such bad shape that any work near it was shut down.

Can someone confirm what my poor memory says?

That sounds like the C&O tunnel in Richmond, Va.

viewtopic.php?f=1&t=2478&p=227101&hilit=C%26O+tunnel+Richmond#p227101

That loco wasn't lost, people knew it was there, although over the years mostly forgotten.

I'm now convinced that Thomas has to be involved in all this:

Doug,

Your description does sound similar to the C&O Churchill Tunnel in Richmond, VA that Dennis mentioned. There was a project proposed a few years ago to enter the tunnel and look for the locomotive which is documented to have been left there after an accident involving the improvement of the tunnel.

However, I have also heard of another legend of a train lost in a tunnel. Your mention of the Baltimore location and the B&O RR makes me think you are referring to that legend and not to the Churchill Tunnel story.

Maybe somebody here could state the legend that I am referring to. As I recall, it was through a mountain tunnel which has since been sealed off. I believe part of the legend says that lost locomotive was discovered in some type of excavation, and then covered back up since there was no plan to recover it.

That graphic from the ground penetrating radar sure looks convincing. I suspect that nobody has ever searched the site with GP radar prior to this. Perhaps it has never even been searched with a magnetometer. Buried treasure legends always bring forth people with metal detectors, which are useless for something like this. A magnetometer search would find it, but the graphic signature would not be anywhere near as detailed as this GP radar image.

The Telegraph reports the GPR image was taken with a KS Analysis GPR KS-700 unit:

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/worldnews/europe/poland/11843875/Polish-soldiers-seal-off-Nazi-gold-train-location-as-finders-reveal-their-clear-evidence.html

Here is a link to the manufacturer's web site, which pretty much confirms the type of image shown can be generated from data acquired by the unit:

http://www.ks-groundradar.com/groundradar/software.html

Its specs:

http://www.ks-groundradar.com/groundrad ... _data.html

Depth, of course, is dependent on the underlying soil and rock conditions. You will note in the spec sheet, they have located WWII tunnels in limestone at a depth of 60 meters.

I'll still believe it when I see it, but this technology isn't science fiction. It goes way beyond the murky images of the not- so distant past.

At risk of stating the obvious, aside from the fact that this ground scanning radar technology is relatively new, no one has used it to search for the train before because no one knew where to look. While there has been seventy years of rumors that a train was buried somewhere in the area, that somewhere covered an awful lot of territory. That the missing piece fell into place due to a deathbed confession is totally believable.

Shouldn't be any big deal for the Polish Gov't to rent similar equipment and conduct their own independent survey. More difficult is going to be the decision to risk lives dealing with at the very least unexploded ordnance, possibly active mines or other booby traps. If this was simply unexploded bombs left over from the war, the logical answer would be to simply blow them in place. That's not going to work if they really believe that there is art, etc. included in the cache.

Should be interesting to see how this develops.

Drill an access hole, send in robots to sniff and look around for nasty things that go bang.

The urban or rural legends about trains caught buried in tunnels was the basis of a great story line in a Clive Cussler novel. Possible? Sure...... probable is another thing. The image shown makes me almost believe it could be there.
