I agree with this statement by the mayor of Nicholson, Pennsylvania, quoted in the news article linked above:

“I think it’s terrible,” said Ann Marie Aylesworth, the mayor of Nicholson. “I think the railroad is doing a big injustice to the town of Nicholson and to the bridge.”

Canadian Pacific had this to say in response:

“Canadian Pacific is responsible to our shareholders and our customers, and so we must safeguard our operation. Our liability insurance ask is consistent with that of other railroads and reflects legal settlements from passenger train incidents in recent years. While we are willing to run these types of trips; we simply must safeguard our operation as we do this.”


Yeah, yeah. What was CP so afraid of, the great E. Hunter Harrison having two strokes and a brain bleed over a weekend of steam excursions run on what soon will not be a part of the new (but not improved?) CP? Give me a break, Corporate North America. You simply did not have the guts to support the local community on this one.

Why can't the 765 run a weekend of trips to Moscow, PA, and back?

I am hopeful that they might consider a ride to Moscow with diesel assist on the 6th....

Lets take this apart:

Norfolk Southern is a Fortune 500 company and faces the same (or greater as a United States company) responsibilities to its shareholders and customers-of which I am one.

Where has there been a $100 million dollar settlement from an excursion train "incident" in "recent years"?

I just got around to looking at this, and I am particularly saddened at Superheater's "funny."

Here is a company with a tremendous heritage, wonderful history, wonderful images from that history (among them wine red passenger trains in beautiful mountains)--and that PR thing has to be one of the lamest excuses for PR I can remember seeing for, well, I can't remember when.

Between nonsense like this and the total lack of ideas in places like Hollywood (hey, they are remaking everything, and even trying to base movies on video and board games), I wonder if we are witnessing the end of. . .no, I won't say it, it would be considered too political, too radical, to critical of our economic system, would get me labeled a socialist or communist or maybe even a nudist or something. . . .

That heritage is long gone and for that, many Canadians are very sad. It was all good fun for Americans when they sent their native son up here to Canada to teach us how to run our railroads. Now it is all turning around and biting you firmly on your buttocks. Good luck with that boys. Frankly, it really looks good on ya! American Bullshit!

While I agree with the idea that CP meant the increased insurance coverage 'punitively', I think J3a-614 has misunderstood the point about 'recent passenger train' incidents. That has nothing to do with "excursion" trains, and while the likelihood of an accident to an excursion train of the magnitude of, say, Amtrak 188 or one of the commuter incidents may be lower, the overall effect in terms of numbers of injured people might easily be as severe.

Now that's funny. Sad fact is, the people addressed in the letter are so used to laying this sort of BS on the voters, they won't recognize it for what it is.
