Things have been very busy at the Wilmington and Western. A very exciting happening is our B&O SW-1 No. 8408 is nearing completion offsite at McHugh Locomotive & Crane where she has received extensive restoration. Look for a more detailed report on her in the near future. Onsite, work is progressing on our 0-6-0 No. 58, she was jacked up to remove the front set of drivers, all of her tires are being replaced, and work continues on her 1472-day boiler inspection. We had a film crew and talent from the BBC filming for a documentary, and we got a coat of primer on a former Clinchfield Railroad foreman's car used for storage. Thanks to J.C. I am confused. Some photos show drivers being rolled out but others show tires being replaced with drivers on engine.

The #2 and #3 axle tires were removed with the drivers still in the frame. #1 axle drivers were removed from the frame, as it was thought to be easier to remove the axle rather than crosshead guides, crossheads, etc. Once the jacks were set it wasn't any trouble to run them up higher after the #2 and #3 tires were off.

I thought it was standard practice to turn the tire tread etc. to finished size after it was back on the wheel? These must be finished machined all over? Maybe this is a practice acceptable for low speed locos, like this switcher? Just curious, thanks!

That switcher cab is way nicer, cleaner, and more original than anything I've ever seen in my entire life !!! Does it have that new car smell ??? You guys better put some big floor mats on the running boards so nobody tracks mud on the floor.

It is my understanding that tires can be profiled either before or after they are installed onto the wheel. They do need to have a finish bore to a specification for the interference fit. I don't have the information in front of me at the moment but I think it is about 0.056 interference for engine No. 58's tires.
