I've enjoyed talking with the German N&W fans. Their work is amazing! The man that built the Y6 is now building an A as well. I'll see if I can find his build log and post it.

I see you're in San Diego. I had a customer there that had purchased a very old model of a J. He was restoring it and dropped off the faceof the earth. I had made all new car and tender wheels for it. I still have the engine truck wheels in my shop, 5 years later. I have steel pipe for tires for the drivers, too. His name was Mark Allen. Does the name ring a bell?

Not that I know of.

Was he part of the Chula Vista Live Steamers?

I think I remember seeing a J class live steam go up for auction on ebay last year that was located in San Diego.

It was going for a high amount and then the auction was ended.

Hmmm. Yes, he was a member of CVLS. He also had a Mogul that he bought so he would have something to run.

That locomotive has historical significance. I found some pics of it on the Live Steam and Outdoor Railroading message board from back in 2007-2009. As I said, I made all new wheels for the riding cars and the tender. We hadn't gotten to the engine truck, trailing truck or drivers. Mark was getting ready to ship the engine truck to me for new wheelsets. We were then going to do the drivers and trailing truck. That's when I didn't hear anything else.

shrink yourself to 1:12 scale you wont know the difference...

Duncan Herring has built both a 1:6 scale N&W "J", and the recently tested 1:6 scale "A". His wife Katherine, is building her own Southern PS-4. These models are perfect locomotives. He turned the wheels for my ALCO C-420, which, unfortunately, doesn't measure up to the standards for perfection in miniature, he has set for his products! You can view his products by Googling, Herring Machine Shop.

Don't forget this beautiful CB&Q 4-6-4. Unfortunately it only comes out to play once a year for the Sandwich Illinois fair which is held right after Labor Day. I'd love to see it with some scale heavyweight Pullmans behind it.

By the way, I didn't find anything searching for Herring Maching Shop, but did have luck searching for "Herring Engineering".

Beautiful! Lovely whistle for something that small, too. And who takes care of the track? I was impressed to NOT see the swaying and bounce so typical of small railroads like this.

Congratulations for the people involved on this road.

This may be slightly O/T, but where would one get drawings and blueprints to build such a beast? Historical societies?

While some are built from full-sized plans, usually obtained from a historical society or museum, there are several small companies that sell drawings, castings, machined parts etc. for builders. I suggest that you Google "Little Engines NJ" or "Allen Models" or look at the "Discover Live Steam" website.

Here's four NKP Berkshires that showed up at the Riverside Live Steamers in California over the last year, 753, 759, 765, & 777. The tender behind the 777 is for the 762 which is nearing completion. The 759 is not complete yet but is getting there.
