Thanks again, Hudson, for the location info!

Another slide, of NP L-9 Class 0-6-0 #1041 along the Seattle Waterfront. From the NPRHA website: the #1041 is from the first order of L-9 engines (#1040-#1049, serial #39528-#39537), and was built by Alco (Manchester) in 1906, serial #39529. 3 of these 10 engines had superheaters installed: #1040, #1042, and #1045; and 2 were switched to oil firing: #1045 and #1049. Does anyone have info on when the #1041 was retired? Thanks in advance. I acquired this slide from Hampton Wayt; this comes from the collection of his father, Howard J. Wayt. I don't have the date info for this slide, or who the photographer was. Howard's collection included both his own slides and those he acquired/traded from other photographers. This is an Ektachrome slide, but I don't know if it's an original or a duplicate. The structure in the background is the Alaskan Way Viaduct, which at the time carried U.S. Highway 99, now State Route 99.

The Northern Pacific Railway ICC Account 51 cards "Steam Locomotive Betterment" are on the Northern Pacific Railway Historical Association website.

These cards cover the purchase of the locomotives, any capital improvements, and value at disposal. Also includes information about driver sizes, number of tubes, etc, etc.

These cards start circa 1916 and go to the end of steam on the NP.

Thanks, Hudson, for the link!

There are 2 retirement dates on the card for #1041: the tender was retired on May 24th, 1954, and the engine was retired on September 9th, 1958. Based on the 1954 date, this slide dates from when the Alaskan Way Viaduct was very new: it opened to traffic on April 4th, 1953, after 3 years of construction in 4 preliminary sections, known as Schedules A-D.

This slide was taken somewhere along Schedules C or D, where the Viaduct is a 2-level structure: northbound lanes on top, southbound lanes in the middle, with surface street access for both the NP and trucks to warehouses and other businesses on the eastern side of the structure, some of these brick buildings can be seen in the background, with the surface version of Alaskan Way (and sidings to an unidentified pier) in the foreground.

Construction of Schedule C of the Viaduct was awarded to both Morrison-Knudsen and Rumsey & Company of Seattle, and one of the companies which worked on the southernmost Schedule D was Pacific Car & Foundry of Renton, WA. Schedule C was completed in September 1952 and Schedule D was completed in March 1953. Schedule B had earlier been completed in July 1951, and the northernmost Schedule A (not actually a section of the viaduct but a cut-and-cover "lid tunnel" under Battery Street) did not open until July 1954; this section was also built by M-K and Rumsey.

Info on viaduct construction from: http://www.historylink.org/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&file_id=9978

I've recently acquired several slides taken in the early-to-mid-1970's in Seattle at King Street Station, by H.E. "Buck" Price. Here's the first:

In October 1974, Amtrak E8A #345 is on the closer run-through platform with a short 4 car train (either the Portland-to-Seattle or Seattle-to-Vancouver, BC local). The first car is a leased GN 56 seat chair-8 seat smoker, originally built by P-S for C&NW. GN, NP, and CB&Q all bought several of these cars secondhand, and none were acquired by Amtrak. Today, there are at least 3 surviving examples: 2 GN cars at the Minnesota Transportation Museum and a NP car down in Oregon. As for the engine: it was built in August 1950 as CB&Q #9946B, later BN #9952, and then (when??) Amtrak #345 (1st). In 1977, it was renumbered to #465 (2nd), and it is listed by Warner and Simon as retired in July 1981. However, a Tim Vermande photo shows that the engine was retired sometime before December 1980 and stored in Brighton Park, Chicago.

Is that a Burlington Northern office car in green and white at the right side of the photo?

Yes it is, but I don't know which one. Let me do some digging, and I'll see if I can't figure this out.

My best guess is that this is BN #A4 (1st) Kootenai River (1st), which was built in 1947 by P-S in Lot #6719 to Plan #7535 as GN #A28, and was renumbered in 1969 to #A4. The car was refurbished/remodeled in 1974, and was renumbered in 1977 to #A8. In 1982, it was renamed Canadian River (2nd), and later had #800142 applied. It is now on display at BNSF Headquarters.

Here's another H.E. "Buck" Price slide, taken at King Street Station in February 1973:

Amtrak E8A #333 and another E appear to have just disconnected from their train, which is parked on the outermost run-through platform track. To the right, another train is on the innermost run-through platform track; note diner #8046 (nee-NP) and the 2 CB&Q sleepers, still with full skirts. The Budd baggage at left is ex-AT&SF.

48 seat diner #8046 was built in 1958 by Budd in Lot #9624-210 as NP #460, 1 of 6 such cars (#458-#463) built in that Lot for the North Coast Limited. The Lot was ordered in July 1957, and the cars were built from December 1957 to January 1958. Intended to be renumbered as BN #1292-#1297, with only the #462 renumbered as such (as #1296), 5 of these cars (#458, #460-#463) were sold in 1971 to Amtrak as #8045-#8049. In 1980, these 5 cars were converted to HEP as #8505-#8509 (not in order); the #8046 as #8509 in June. In 1986, #8506 and #8508 were reconfigured to griddle diners #8550 and #8552 respectively. All 5 cars are still active.

The one car which wasn't sold, #459, became BN #A26, and then BNSF #10 Lake Superior (#800139). On May 26th of this year at Flagstaff, AZ, there was a small fire in the kitchen while westbound in the consist of a benefit special for the foster childcare system. The car was sent back to Topeka for assessment, and in the meantime BNSF is/was leasing Iowa Pacific's nee-NYC diner #448.

E8A #333 was built in March 1950* as CB&Q #9941B, later BN #9934, and then was sold to Amtrak on August 1st, 1972, but wasn't renumbered as #333 (1st) until sometime after October. Warner lists that the #333 was retired in August 1976, and in December, it was photographed by Kim E. Piersol as dead-in-tow in a freight at Dolton, IL. Chuck Zeiler lists that it was scrapped in 1977: http://www.rrpicturearchives.net/showPicture.aspx?id=1879627

*RR Picture Archives lists March, and Warner lists January.

Another slide, of UP 10RM-6DB sleeper #1429 Pacific Ocean (Budd, Lot #9660-039, Plan #9522, 1950), taken at Frankfort Junction in Philadelphia in August 1971. The slide is a Kodachrome original, photographer unknown. Note the presence of a second Pacific-series sleeper and an ex-NYC 10-16 Slumbercoach (Sleepercoach in their parlance) reconfigured from a 22RM Harbor-series car.

Regarding the above slide of IC #4001:

I just posted a copy on Trainorders, and was informed by "philgos" that it was taken not by John Kirschner, but by Robert R. "Bob" Larson, who worked in engine service for over 4 decades, for SOO, WP, and UP; and author of Life on the Feather River Route. It was used by John Kirschner in the Winterail presentation "A Tale of Two Cities".

Another Ektachrome duplicate purchased from John Benson, of freshly-painted GN GP9 #683 with an AB pair of FT's. The location, date, and photographer are unknown. The #683 was built in April 1956, serial #21256, to BN #1835, rebuilt with chopped nose sometime before December 1985, sold in October 1987 to Montana Rail Link, later renumbered to #108, assigned to I&M Rail Link, placed in deadline in Livingston sometime before April 2007, no photos past June 2008, no longer on roster according to The Diesel Shop.

Another slide purchased from John Benson, of GN express boxcar #2636 in the coach yard in Seattle, on February 28th, 1970, along with 6RM-5DB-2C sleeper #1372 Akamina Pass. This is a duplicate slide, and the brand is unknown.

Seeing as how the uploading window for RR Picture Archives seems to be on the fritz at the moment, I've posted this slide directly, which I acquired from John Benson.

This is an original Kodachrome slide of NP steam boiler-equipped F7A #6509A in Minneapolis, on April 12th, 1966, taken by Jim Claflin. The #6509A was built in September 1949 in order #E1214, serial #8732. Later BN #9776, it was sold in August 1972 to Amtrak as #102:1, and it was retired in October 1975.

Another duplicate slide purchased from John Benson, of GN 60' RPO-baggage #44 in Seattle in May 1974. The slide is mis-labeled as taken in Spokane, but the beat up orange barrel stenciled "KSS" for King Street Station and the top of the Sears Building clocktower (now Starbucks HQ) above the streamlined heavyweight baggage car in Big Sky Blue reveal the real location. The film brand of the slide is unknown. The #44 was 1 of 2 such cars acquired from C&NW in 1964; the other was #43. These 2 cars were built in 1949 by AC&F in Lot #3035 as C&NW #8225 (GN #43) and #8226 (GN #44); they were ordered in February 1946 for the Overland Pool and delivered in September 1949. At the same time, UP ordered 3 cars, #5900-#5902, which were retired in 1970 and subsequently transferred to the MofW (roadway) department as #903682-#903684. The #43-#44 were planned to be renumbered to BN #604-#605, and are listed by Randall as retired in 1971 and stored, no further disposition info. Were either of these cars later transferred to the MofW department? Thanks in advance!
