The 150 ton Pollock hot metal car that sat out in the field at the Carrie Furnaces National Historic Landmark is being moved into the No. 6 furnace cast house. The total distance is about 800 yards, but with no track left in the site RJ Corman is using panel track to move the car the distance. The last leg of the trip into the cast house should be done today.

The move is being paid for by CSX Transportation as a gift to the Rivers of Steel Heritage Corporation. The car was built in Youngstown, OH by the William B. Pollock Co. in the early 1950s and is the last of the 10 axle 150 ton cars in existence.

Was this car original to the Carrie Furnace operations, or a refugee from elsewhere?

Quite odd truck arrangement on that car. Four friction bearing axles and six roller bearing axles. Maybe the friction trucks were recycled from other equipmentm

I bet the roller bearings can not take the heat under the hot metal bottle.

But do I see the ends of rotating cap roller bearing inserts rotating inside those journal boxes of the 4 wheel trucks? Watch the video carefully.

Would be fun to model in 1" scale. Glad it got saved. Was the container covered in asbestos originally, or something else?

All roller bearing. It came from Pollock that way. Hot metal cars in that era usually had roller bearings inside of plain bearing journal boxes to protect the bearing seals from hot metal splashes.
