Union Pacific 2-8-0 #618, also in Heber City, UT is undergoing restoration as well. Both it and Great Western #75 are operated by the Heber Valley RR. #618 requires much less extensive work and will be most likely be operational before #75.

What about USATC #1702/Great Smoky Mountains Railroad #1702, sister to Alaska Railroad #557? According the their web site it just received a new firebox.

I don't know if USATC 612 (another sister to ARR #557) belongs on the list or not. It has gone to Age of Steam Warehouse, but I don't know if there are plans to overhaul it.

A minor correction to your note on ARR #557. Although built under an Army contract, I wouldn't consider it to be ex-U.S. Army. ARR numbers 551 through 557 were supplied new to the Alaska railroad. They had USATC road numbers assigned, but none were operated by the Army before going into ARR ownership. As built, all included modifications made at Baldwin from the standard "S-160" design per ARR's order and were delivered with electric lights, knuckle couplers, bell, air operated fire door, and pilot. They were shipped directly to Alaska when completed.

Four others of the 550 class were ex-U.S. Army and were apparently purchased as war surplus. ARR 558 and 559 appear to have been new and one was at an Army supply depot in Baltimore when purchased, probably in preparation for a trip to Europe that never happened. ARR 561 and 562 operated previously on the Polk and Claiborne RR. Contrary to published accounts it is very doubtful that either of these went to Europe before coming to the ARR.

I wanted to make the clarification as Tourret and numerous web sites have errors in the pre-ARR history for the ARR 550 class locomotives.

Huntingdon & Broad Top Mountain 2-8-0 number 38, now owned by the Everett RR, is in the process of restoration. The running gear and tender are in Claysburg, PA, and the boiler is in the W.M. Scenic's shop in Ridgeley, WV. This engine is a local favorite and all involved are anxious to see the restoration completed. However, I do not know whether work on 2-6-6-2 1309 has interfered with work on 38's boiler. Also, the Everett's personnel have been quite busy putting 2-6-0 number 11 in service. In short, I cannot give an accurate update on progress. Does anybody have more information?

Can anybody tell us the status of Buffalo Creek & Gauley number 13, or Lake Superior & Ishpeming number 31, both at the Age of Steam Roundhouse in Sugarcreek, Ohio? I understand neither is operable, but either one could be put in service without a great deal of work. However, other preservation and stabilization projects may be taking priority now at AOS.

LS&I 33 at the AOSR is currently receiving firebox repairs, including a new crown.

Buffalo Creek & Gauley 2-8-0 #4 has been moved to Cass, WV for restoration.

New Hope & Ivyland's 2-8-0 #40 (Former Lancaster & Chester #40) operated as few as two years ago (if memory serves me correctly) and needs some additional work done to it to have it operable again - who knows, maybe 2016 is the year it returns again to service.

Got some welcome additions, so I'll amend the list as follows:

Alaska Railroad #557 (U.S. Army design) in Anchorage, Alaska (restoration ongoing)

Birmingham & Southeastern #200 (Valley #97) in Essex, CT (restoration announced)

Black River & Western (ex-Great Western) #60 in Flemington, New Jersey (operational)

Central of Georgia #509 in Macon, Georgia (planned restoration by a local group)

Denver & Rio Grande Western #223 (3' gauge) in Ogden, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California (operational)

Duluth & Northeastern #28 in Cloquet, Minnesota (restoration ongoing)

Great Western #75 in Heber City, Utah (restoration ongoing at railway)

Huntington & Broad Top Mountain (Everett Railroad) #38 (ongoing restoration)

Lake Superior & Ishpeming #33 in Sugar Grove, Ohio (repairs being made)

Mississippian (ex-SLSF) #76 in Owosso, Michigan (restoration started; status?)

Nevada Northern #81 in East Ely, Nevada (restoration planned by railroad)

Sierra Railroad #28 in Jamestown, California (restoration ongoing by museum)

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee (operational)

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois (operational)

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (operational)

Union Pacific #618 in Heber City, Utah (ongoing restoration by railway)

Warren & Saline River (ex-U.S. Army) #1702 in Dillsboro. North Carolina (ongoing restoration)

My goodness; this brings the number of Consolidations running or being worked on this decade up to 19. This is great! Thanks to bigjim, southern154, Tom and Dick for the new info. Always glad to add on to this list.

Les

Note: Clarification of info made to locomotives at Heber City, Utah per note from David Wilkinson. Thanks Dave!

Thanks for the correction. The LS&I 2-8-0 at Age of Steam in Sugarcreek, Ohio (not Sugar Grove) is indeed number 33 --- not 31.

A minor correction: the Heber Valley Railroad in Heber City, UT, home of ex-UP #618 and ex-Great Western #75 is a state-owned tourist railway. There is no actual museum at the facility, although some historic equipment is on display.

Another addition:

Southern Pacific 2706 is privately owned in Colusa CA and is the subject of an ongoing restoration.

I recently thanked bigjim4life for an additional 2-8-0, and then forgot to add it to the list! So here is the list with the Consolidation added:

Alaska Railroad #557 (U.S. Army design) in Anchorage, Alaska (restoration ongoing)

Birmingham & Southeastern #200 (Valley #97) in Essex, CT (restoration announced)

Black River & Western (ex-Great Western) #60 in Flemington, New Jersey (operational)

Buffalo Creek & Gauley #4 in Cass, West Virginia (restoration ongoing)

Central of Georgia #509 in Macon, Georgia (planned restoration by a local group)

Denver & Rio Grande Western #223 (3' gauge) in Ogden, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California (operational)

Duluth & Northeastern #28 in Cloquet, Minnesota (restoration ongoing)

Great Western #75 in Heber City, Utah (restoration ongoing at railway)

Huntington & Broad Top Mountain (Everett Railroad) #38 (ongoing restoration)

Lake Superior & Ishpeming #33 in Sugar Grove, Ohio (repairs being made)

Mississippian (ex-SLSF) #76 in Owosso, Michigan (restoration started; status?)

Nevada Northern #81 in East Ely, Nevada (restoration planned by railroad)

Sierra Railroad #28 in Jamestown, California (restoration ongoing by museum)

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee (operational)

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois (operational)

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (operational)

Union Pacific #428 in Union, Illinois (restoration ongoing by museum)

Union Pacific #618 in Heber City, Utah (ongoing restoration by railway)

Warren & Saline River (ex-U.S. Army) #1702 in Dillsboro. North Carolina (ongoing restoration)

I attribute the omission of "Old Slobberface" to my horrible note writing. My apologies to Jim. So now we have an even 20 on the list!

Nevada Northern 93 is comming to its 1472 day inspection soon.

The Grand Canyon did a lot of work to 18. If you look at the other LS&I sisters they have coil springs on the rear drivers where 18 now has leaf springs. The tender trucks were changed out for the freight car trucks. As Tom stated 18 was easier to service as you did not need alatter to reach everything like you did on 4960. The blow down vented thru a difuser under the cab.

SP 3420 felt like it had a vertical motion before it started to move. 18 was the one 2-8-0 that I have been on that came close to doing the same type of motion. My last run with 18 we moved 12 passenger cars (most had been stored for a long time) in the yard with her. While the air pump did not like charging the air and the car man was worrried that 18 would not be able to shove the cut back up the hill, 18 announced that it was working just fine. it was one of the few days I did not have to answer that 18 was just there for show.

Up in your neck of the woods (southeastern Wisconsin), one of the sisters of the 18 (number 21) is privately owned and supposedly there are plans to restore her to service. I never added her to this list because I never knew of any active work going on on her. The last I heard is that the owners are building a new tender for the 2-8-0. As for the 18 herself, I think she is out of service but I don't know its exact status.

Les

Les, can you or anybody else please give me a location for the 21? I have heard that she is in Oak Creek, WI which is near Mitchell Field south of Milwaukee. Any help appreciated here, thanks.

Tom -

I wish I knew exactly where LS&I number 21 is located. Perhaps someone knows the answer and can advise.

Randolph R. Ruiz advised that SP #2706 was undergoing a restoration to service. I confirmed from their Facebook page that this work is definitely going on, so I'll add the engine to the list:

Alaska Railroad #557 (U.S. Army design) in Anchorage, Alaska (restoration ongoing)

Birmingham & Southeastern #200 (Valley #97) in Essex, Connecticut (restoration announced)

Black River & Western (ex-Great Western) #60 in Flemington, New Jersey (operational)

Buffalo Creek & Gauley #4 in Cass, West Virginia (restoration ongoing)

Denver & Rio Grande Western #223 (3' gauge) in Ogden, Utah (restoration ongoing)

Duluth & Northeastern #14 in Fillmore, California (operational)

Duluth & Northeastern #28 in Cloquet, Minnesota (restoration ongoing)

Great Western #75 in Heber City, Utah (restoration ongoing at railway)

Huntington & Broad Top Mountain (Everett Railroad) #38 (ongoing restoration)

Lake Superior & Ishpeming #33 in Sugar Grove, Ohio (repairs being made)

Mississippian (ex-SLSF) #76 in Owosso, Michigan (restoration started; status?)

Nevada Northern #81 in East Ely, Nevada (restoration planned by railroad)

Sierra Railroad #28 in Jamestown, California (restoration ongoing by museum)

Southern #154 in Knoxville, Tennessee (operational)

Southern #401 in Monticello, Illinois (operational)

Southern #630 in Chattanooga, Tennessee (operational)

Southern Pacific #2706 in Colusa, California (ongoing private restoration)

Union Pacific #428 in Union, Illinois (restoration ongoing by museum)

Union Pacific #618 in Heber City, Utah (ongoing restoration by railway)

Warren & Saline River (ex-U.S. Army) #1702 in Dillsboro. North Carolina (ongoing restoration)

The restoration of #2706 by owner John Manley is interesting and included a new building with an overhead crane! Seems as if John is serious about getting the old 2-8-0 running again! Now up to 21 on the list!

Add Arcade and Attica 18 to the list of operators, and don't forget the D&RGW 2-8-0s
