Hello Friends,

I wanted to share some old photos I have of locomotives and freight cars at the Susuqehanna Coal Company Collieries in Nanticoke, Pa during the 1910s to 1920s. If you like them and want to see other photos from this era of the Susquehanna Coal Company operations in Nanticoke check out my website. http://nanticokecolliery.webs.com/

I have 100+ old negatives of the Susquehanna Coal Co from this era I have been working on scanning and am considering on putting into a small book.

Happy Holidays and hope you enjoy the photos.

Wonderful photos!

Is the saddletanker in the last two pictures an early Vulcan?

Often photographs are our only preserved record. You are doing history a favor! Thank you.

Why are the negatives clipped in funny angles?

This is really great stuff. If you have more pictures of that quality, concentrating on the one theme, publishing them as a book would indeed be not the worst choice, as long as you find enough archive material to describe what the pictures are about. Developing a book theme around a stock of old negatives....

Hi,

I love the photos. I second the book suggestion.

Unfortunately or fortunately, when I hear Susquehanna, I seem to immediately think of Abbot and Costello and the Susquehanna Hat Company skit.

Neat photos! I find it interesting that the steamer turned over onto its side has six drivers whereas the locomotives pictured working for Susquehanna Coal Company seem to be small 0-4-0T's. I wonder if this might be an engine from the connecting carrier (PRR?) rather than a SCC owned locomotive? If it IS an SCC engine, are there any photos of it in the collection?

Susquehanna Coal Co. was a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania RR, and it still exists in some form today, though not part of the remains of the PRR. As for the locomotive on its side, I'd guess it split the switch. It looks to be a narrow gauge mine "lokie," noting the wooden buffer blocks. Accidents like this were fairly common around the collieries back in the day. From the two lokies nearby, it looks like the may be planning to rig some chains and cables to roll it back upright and back onto the rails. The vast majority of lokies used around the anthracite mines were built by the Vulcan Iron Works in nearby Wilkes-Barre, though a few Baldwins and Porters were around.
