This an original Kodachrome taken by Jim Claflin in Kansas City, KS, on Saturday, October 4th, 1975, of 2 Santa Fe covered wagons: #287C and #268L.

F9A #287C was built in July 1956 in Order #3191, serial #21140, frame #3191-A14, 1 of 18 F9A's (#281L & C to #289L & C) built in that Order in June and July of that year, serials #21127-#21142 and #21423-#21424. There were also 18 F9B's built in that Order, #281A & B to #289A & B, serials #21143-#21158 and #21425-#21426. 16 of the F9A's built in this Order were later rebuilt to CF7's, including the #287C, which became CF7 #2441 in September 1977. The #2441 was retired and sold in November 1985 to Watco as WATX #4, and was later resold to Chevron. I wasn't able to locate any further info on this engine's whereabouts or current status, that is if it's still extant.

F7A #268L was built in September 1951 in Order #3095, serial #13745, frame #3095-A19, 1 of 20 F7A's (#259L & C to #268L & C) built in that Order in August and September of that year, serials #13727-#13746. There were also 20 F7B's built in that Order, #259A & B to #268A & B, serials #13767-#13786. 18 of the F7A's built in this Order were later rebuilt to CF7's, including the #268L, which became CF7 #2427 in December 1978. The #2427 was retired and sold in June 1984 to the Blue Mountain & Reading, and was later resold to the North Shore, then to the Nittany & Bald Eagle, which scrapped the engine sometime after May 2012.

This is an original Kodachrome taken by John C. Benson in Seattle on July 27th, 1984, of Seattle & North Coast Railroad F7A #101.

For a few years, the S&NC operated the former Milwaukee Road line on the northern end of the Olympic Peninsula between Port Townsend and Port Angeles, which was reached by car ferry; the docks were located in Port Townsend and Seattle, and in MILW days there were also docks at Bellingham, Shelton, and several other locations on Puget Sound, together making up the most isolated pockets of operations in the westernmost Division of Lines West. After the MILW pulled out in 1980, the S&NC tried to make a go of it, but folded after just a few years. As part of their effort, they acquired 3 F7A Units from BN and at least 2 switchers from the MILW: a SW1 (MILW #1619 to #956 to #869 to S&NC #52, now Ballard Terminal RR #98) and a SW1500 (MILW #1637 to #614 to S&NC #55). There were also at least 3 passenger cars: a North Coast Limited sleeper buffet lounge observation (ex-Solano Rail Car Co. Vija K., exx-CB&Q #483, nee-Minneapolis Club, P-S, Lot #6781, Plan #4120/#4120A, 1948/54), named Mount Olympus by S&NC, later owned by Royal Rail-Gold Coast Ltd. as the #800483 Belle Terre, now owned by Dave and Lewis Foster; and 2 cars acquired from Amtrak: club lounge-chair #3820 (ex-AT&SF #1398, Budd, Lot #994, 1938, named Dungeness River by S&NC), disposition unknown, and 56 seat chair #5604 (ex-SCL, exx-SAL #6200, nee-60 seats, Budd, Lot #96501, 1939, seating decreased in 1967), which is now owned by the Pacific Northwest Chapter NRHS in Portland.

#101 was built in October 1950 in Order #3042 as GN #274B (freight-geared, serial #11066, frame number #3042-A4), to BN #610, sold to S&NC in December 1980. After S&NC folded, it was parked along with SW1200 #55 at the dock in Seattle before being sold to a "Mr. Beagle" via the Lewis & Clark RR in 1988. It was acquired in 1996 by Doyle McCormack and returned to GN paint as DLMX #474. It is now used on the Oregon Coast Scenic RR, having been isolated there when the ex-SP Tillamook Bay line was washed out in the Coast Range in 2007, and I believe it has since been acquired from McCormack.

#102 was built in January 1953 in Order #3151 as GN #464A (freight-geared, serial #17852, frame number #3151-A2), to BN #684, sold to S&NC in December 1980. It later went to the Grand Traverse Dinner Train as #1951, stored (when??) by the Central States Rail Associates on the Iowa Northern, operation became the Columbia Star Dinner Train in 2007, acquired by the Wisconsin Great Northern last year.

#103 was built in October 1950 in Order #3044 as GN #364A (passenger-geared, serial #11073, frame number #3044-A1), to BN #9726, to #704 for freight operation in May 1976, sold to S&NC in December 1980. It later went to the Grand Traverse Dinner Train as #1950, stored (when??) by the Central States Rail Associates on the Iowa Northern, operation became the Columbia Star Dinner Train in 2007, acquired by the Wisconsin Great Northern last year.

This an original Agfachrome taken by Bob Gottier in Spokane, WA, in January 1971, of BN passenger-geared F3A #9732, which was built in October 1947 as GN #260A in Order #E800, serial #4334, frame #E800-A1. 2 A Units (#260A, #261A) and 2 B Units (#260B, #261B) were built in that Order, serials #4334-#4337 and frames #E800-A1, #E800-A2, #E800-B1, and #E800-B2. In 1960, these 4 units were renumbered to #366A-B and #367A-B, and all 4 later received Big Sky Blue paint. However, the #260A/#366A was the only one of these four that made it to the BN merger, as the #9732. Like a number of other passenger-numbered F Units, the #9732 was later no longer needed for said service, and was renumbered in September 1976 for freight service as #706 (2nd)*, and was retired and sold in November 1981 to the Colorado & Eastern; I wasn't able to locate any further disposition info.

*The first #706 was ex-NP #6005A [2nd], nee-#6016A [1st], which had been retired in August 1971.

This is an original Kodachrome taken by Dick Kuelbs in Chicago in April 1963, of Pullman-owned Plan #3410 12S-1DR sleeper East Cambridge, 1 of 100 such cars built in 1925 in Lot #4868; cars were outshopped between May and August. 16 cars were built for the Pennsy, 12 cars for the 20th Century Limited, 16 cars for the Capitol Limited, and the remainder (56) were built for the general service pool, including East Cambridge. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, PRR acquired 14 of their 16 cars (of the other 2, 1 was retained by Pullman and 1 went to the New Haven), NYC acquired 10 of their cars (the other 2 went to the Pennsy), B&O acquired 13 of their cars* (of the other 3, 2 went to the GM&O and 1 had been wrecked on the B&O in 1944), and of the 56 general service cars, 1 was acquired by the Pennsy, 22 by NYC, 1 by the Wabash, 1 by L&N, 1 by the New Haven, 1 by the Frisco, 1 by B&M, 3 by N&W, and 25 remained the property of Pullman until scrapped or otherwise sold at later dates, including the East Cambridge, which was sold for scrap to Hyman-Michaels in September 1964.

*2 of the cars sold to B&O had been rebuilt in 1942 to Plan #4090F Tower-series 8S-1DR-3DB sleepers.

This is an original Kodachrome taken by Dick Kuelbs in New Orleans, on Saturday, April 20th, 1963, of Pullman-owned Plan #3523F 6C-3DR sleeper Glen Turret, 1 of 20 such cars built in 1926 in Lot #4974 for the general service pool, originally to Plan #3523A; cars were outshopped in August and September. 11 of the 20 cars later had the Plan suffix changed from A to F: 8 cars in 1931 and 3 cars in 1936, including the Glen Turret. In 1953, an additional 2 cars had the Plan suffix changed from A to K, and 2 of the cars which had the suffix changed to F in 1931 had the suffix changed again (1 to K and 1 to M). At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, all but 5 of these cars were retained by Pullman. Of the cars that were sold, Glen Torridon went to L&N (later used as dormitory #1622), Glen Strae and Glen Summit went to SOU as #2522 and #2523 respectively, and Glen Moriston and Glen Tarsan went to SP (later #8457 and #8459 respectively).

Of the 15 cars retained by Pullman, at least 12 were repainted to Two-Tone Gray between May 1953 and April 1955; 3 of these were previously painted (2 in 1951 and 1 in 1952) for assignment to SAL trains. Glen Turret was 1 of the 3 cars which apparently did not receive TTG paint, and it was also 1 of 4 cars in this Lot which were equipped in 1936-1937 with ice A/C; all other cars had Pullman mechanical A/C. Of these 15 cars, 14 were sold for scrap to either Hyman-Michaels or Midwest Steel in 1962 (1 car), 1964 (11 cars), and 1966 (2 cars); the Glen Turret was sold to Midwest Steel in November 1964.

The 15th car, Glen Saddell, was sold in June 1967 to Reuben Darby's Darby Wood Products, and it later (when??) went to the Adirondack RY (later the Adirondack Scenic) as #MW9. It is currently owned by Remsen Development Corporation (acquired when??), and is listed in the "Surviving Pullman" thread as line item #142. As posted in that thread, Iowa Pacific is or was in negotiations with Remsen to acquire this car. Iowa Pacific already owns the other known survivor from this Lot, the Glen Summit, as SLRG #9172 ("Surviving Pullman" line item #91). It had been sold or donated at an unknown date to the Virginia Museum of Transportation, and it was later (when??) sold to Mid-America Locomotive & Car Repair (MALX) in Evansville, IN (no relation to Mid-America Railcar Leasing). MALX later resold the Glen Summit to Iowa Pacific in circa 2012.

This is an original Kodachrome acquired from John Benson. It was taken in Council Bluffs, IA, on Saturday, October 27th, 1962, of UP-owned Pullman Plan #3973A 10S-1C-1DR sleeper Inland Empire, which was built in 1930 in Lot #6358, 1 of 13 such cars built in that Lot; cars were outshopped between May 16th and 29th. 4 cars were built for UP's Columbine, 4 (including the Inland Empire) were built for San Francisco-Spokane service over the SP and UP, 4 were built for NYC's Southwestern Limited, and 1 car was built for the general service pool. At the 12/31/1948 Pullman divestiture, UP acquired the 4 Columbine cars and 3 of the 4 SF-Spokane cars, including the Inland Empire (the 4th was acquired by SP). Besides 1 car which was wrecked in 1950, the remaining 6 cars were withdrawn from Pullman lease between 1959 and 1962, 4 of these in 1962, including the Inland Empire, which was withdrawn on June 29th, along with Columbine car Balsam Fir. Of these 4, the Balsam Fir was rebuilt to dynamometer #210 and is still on the roster as UPP #210, and the other 3, including Inland Empire, were modified for the roadway (MofW) department in 1963-1964; in 1964, the Inland Empire became roadway bunk car #906036. In the early-to-mid-70's, these cars were retired from roadway service; the #906036 was retired in 1970.

This is a Dick Wallin Ektachrome duplicate of one of the Talgo II trainsets built by AC&F for service in Spain; one of these (I don't know if it's this one specifically) is now at the railroad museum in Madrid.

There is no info written on the mount regarding when or where this slide was taken, or by whom, but I posted this slide to Trainorders, and other members theorized that it was either:

1) Taken in Spain or Portugal.

Or:

2) Taken in Berwick, PA, (location of the AC&F plant), during an open house when the trainset was brand new. That member also wrote that the trainset was tested on the Lackawanna branch in Berwick before being shipped overseas.

This is an original Kodachrome taken by J.J. Buckley in Saint Paul of BN train #29, the Mainstreeter, with an A-B-A set of ex-NP F Units, on Thursday, April 22nd, 1971, just over a week before the beginning of Amtrak and the end of this train. In the lead is steam generator-equipped F9A #9802, which was built in February 1955 as NP #7007A (serial #20324, 1 of 4 F9's [2 A's, 2 B's] built in Order #3181, frame #3181-A1), later (when??) renumbered to #6700C (2nd) (when the steam generator was installed), later (when??) renumbered again from BN #9802 to #768 (when it was reassigned from passenger to freight duty), and retired in August 1982. Next is steam generator-equipped F7B #9769, which was built in September 1949 as NP #6511B (serial #8741, 1 of 12 F7's [9 A's, 3 B's] built in Order #E1214, frame #E1214-B2), sold in August 1972 to Amtrak #153 (1st), and retired in October 1975. The 3rd unit is not identifiable.

Why are you posting these slides under the thread of "Slide Scanner Recommendations"? I would never have seen them if I hadn't clicked on this thread just out of curiosity. They need to be moved to another thread so people can find them easier.

Speaking of the original topic, does the Epson 550 scanner have an actual choice for "RAW" after you choose "Professional Mode"? Or, must we use other settings to make it scan without any automatic adjustments? They are available at some Best Buy stores in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area.

This shot is 1953 Railfair at Atlantic City, NJ.

Looks to be the same train.

Another slide:

Additions and corrections are welcome. Thanks in advance.

The track - flat bottomed rail and spiked to ties is wrong for Spain/Portugal, plus they are a broader gauge there.
The police(?) uniform on the person at the side of the train certainly doesn't fit in with those places either.
