Couple thousand volts routed through the frame of the gate will stop it fairly quick.

How about covering the entire gate or fence area in a coat of motor grease might? Stop these idiots

You DO NOT cover the entire gate area with grease. The bad will that happens when a casual visitor leans against the fence for a view and finds his clothes ruined is not worth it.

There are "unclimbable" fence materials out there--check out the steel mesh used by places like Amtrak's Northeast Corridor--it resembles the diamond grid used in some steps.

Or look at these and other ideas:

Hi,

Policing an area to keep trepasser's out is a loosing prospect. Someone can always outthink you. For example, the continuous fight between computer virus programmers and the anti-virus programmers.

The goal is to keep the intruder's success to a tolerable minimum.

How about two panels on a fence mounted on a rotating cam (like pedals on a bicycle) so that when weight is applied, a motor can start up moving the panels so that finger and toe holds will be painful?

How about a pressure sensative fence of some sort so that the pressure will cause flood lights to come on and maybe even sound a horn? This will scare off most casual tesspassers.

How about putting guard dogs in the property?

Never heard of guard cats but cats do have sharp teeth and claws.

How about a top fence rail that when pressure is applied, it settles and spikes come out? Probably as bad as razor wire when it comes to city ordinaces. "Gotta protect the tresspassers at all costs?"

How about motion sensors and occasional nights of some member sleeping on site?

Doug vV

P.S. If you've not seen National Treasure, Nickolas Cage's character has to actually beat the National Archives security on the Declaration of Independence.

Maybe have someone come out and try a design (on paper) of a security system and then get someone else to try to defeat it who might be skilled in tresspassing but not familiar with your defenses.

That's strange, I see plenty of places where I live that use barbed wire, usually as a "topping" on a chain link fence, very often angled outward so climbing over it is akin to climbing an overhanging rock.

I also see examples with razor wire, but that's usually at a prison or jail.

You should visit (crime-prone) big cities more often. Razor wire long ago became the default for such fence topping.

Or you can speak to the city council of Guelph, Ontario, where 6167 has been painfully restored, but left without a fence, because vandalism is apparently non-existent. Besides, "people want to get close to the locomotive".

Honestly, I think the over hanging fence topper is the way to go, unless CNR wakes up and decides to celebrate the centenary with style. I have to say, I like the grease idea.

I second this... but not grease. Grease is intended to hurt the little kiddies, and that will upset their parents.

Slather the top wires with pigeon repellent. Goggle "roost no more." It comes in a caulking gun cartridge, and is sticky as all get-out.

And you are simply trying to do your civic duty and keep pigeon droppings from collecting along the fence.

Amtrak's NEC by my house is 4 tracks wide, years ago Amtrak put fences up to keep people from crossing the tracks at stations and did grease the top poles of the fence to keep people from climbing over, they never came back to reapply after the first time.

Try this approach, assuming the fence is in the rear or little used area of the property. it will last about two to three years depending on geographical area

horse or Cow Manure - Spread about a 1/4 to 1/2 inch of fresh manure about 1 to 2 feet wide along the outside border. Place lime on top to crust over to help mask smell, then top it with leaf mulch about 2" thick or more. IT WILL smell for a bit but go away.
Effective - the owner of a local building did this to stop the graffiti and it worked, seems the kids did not want to stink and moved on to easier targets. The rain keeps the poo in a soft state so it is walked on it transfers to the offender.
low cost, great place to plant a few climbing rose bushes for border at a later time.

I'm assuming this is CN #6069?

Looking at some photos it seems that you've only got a 4 ft fence or so around the engine, or has that changed? Not much you can do to keep people from climbing it when it's that short.

Of course you have to ask why they're climbing the fence. To climb on the locomotive? To just get closer? Vandals? Knowing what they're trying to do might help you invent a way to keep them off.
