Not grease, but crater lube, up high where it won't get on casual viewers, but will ruin the clothes and hands of anyone trying to climb. I do like the electric fence idea, G motors ran great on 11K (never mind the frequency-), but it isn't worth going to jail over.

I think the statement has been made, we are sick and tired of protecting and preserving irreplaceable piece of equipment, historically important equipment, only to see them spray painted, smashed, vandalized, and weathered . Respect has to be taught at home, and the excitement of trains is a strong magnet for youth.

We want others to appreciate what we love.

Hi,

Has anyone tried a double fence? One fence being about 24" from parallel to the other?

Double fence, with a Rottweiler in the "dog run". Yup, that should work just fine!

I agree with what Richard has stated, that respect has to be taught at home. The sad truth is that society simply won't allow anyone to have nice things anymore.

Grease? Poop? High-volutage Electricity? Heck, why not plant a flipping mine field and punji stake traps while you're at it?

Yeah, good luck with that.
For every thing none of us could care less about, there's someone who loves it dearly.

There are variouse fence sensors that can be mounted on fences to alert of intrution example
http://www.rbtec.com/Perimeter-Fence-Alarm-System
http://www.magal-s3.com/53837.html

Also if you need something protected and you don't care if anyone can see it "chain link fence inserts" make it almost impossable to climb and difficult to cut. plant some Hawthorns (Crataegus spp.) outside the fence for some extra protection.

Alternately, but plant some poison oak along the fence line. Wild roses are probably better yet. I'd second putting crater lube on the top rail if visibility is an issue. Make flouting the law inconvenient for them.

Strategically placed caged skunks would work well..

First off, it should have been a 7 or 8 foot fence. 6 is too low.

Secondly, can you share a photo of the gate in question? I have a feeling that they are stepping on the gate latch or hinges and using that to propel them up and over. Can't make a reccomendation if I can't see the problem.

We maintain about 1500 feet of fence and several gates at Carrie Furnaces. We are always trying to out think the trespassers.

Hi,

I do not recall where I saw it, but I saw a chain link fence gate hinge that did not have a flat top. It was a sort of cone with a rounded top that would have made standing on it very difficult but it was not sharp - it had a rounded top.

If this a memory from my days working for NASA Mission Control, the memory could have been from 1982-3.

Sorry I can not recall better.

This is an old picture but you can see the hinges. I think they are using that to get up and then climb over the gate.

If I can remember correctly, the museums down in Brazil use a combo of electric fence with razor wire topped on concrete barriers. At the Museu da Imigracao in Sao Paulo they have electrified fence hooked up to the CPTM commuter line that runs parallel to their excursion trackage. It runs on 3000 volts DC and is electrified at all times to discourage potential wannabe thugs and slackers. Now as far as the safety record that might not be your best option especially here in the US. I believe at least a few pedestrians here and there have been critically injured even killed by accidentally touching the wire in the past. However I see it as very intimidating and is well worth the extra energy cost; long term no one should ever bother you,
