Life after VIA,

1993 (May) to Les Trains Touristque du Saint-Laurent # 2143 "CAP TOURMENTE"

1997 to Waterloo-St. Jacobs Railway # 2143 "CONESTOGA RIVER" (painted in CNR's 1950's paint scheme, "WARPATH RIVER" name plates still on end doors)

2007 (Oct) to Medina Railroad Museum, Median NY "CONESTOGA RIVER"

2013 to Southern Prairie Railway / Ogema Heritage Railway Assoc, owned by Gary Southgate, Battleford SK (stored)

Yes, the AC was changed to EM, and the cars were received in a rather threadbare condition, so had all new carpeting, new upholstery, roomette curtains, etc. all updated.

I may have a photo of the car at Medina, and will post it if I can find it.

Here's a shot I took of the car in 2013 at Medina, NY. Not the best light, but it was mid-January.

Just wondering how the "artifact" ended up in a scrap bucket at Pullman in Chicago. Maybe I missed something.

Well, my father-in-law has been gone now for some 20 years, but when I one day meet him at the Pearly Gates, I'll make sure to ask him for the exact details.

The photo above of the car at Western Ave. in UP colors shows the emblem was already gone at that time... while the car was still under lease to Pullman. Likely, when the cars were repainted for use on the UP City trains, the connection with the Hiawatha was de-emphasized, and the emblems were removed by Pullman when they repainted the car.

Thanks, Dennis. I thought maybe it came off upon sale to CN and maybe they had Pullman do some work and that's how it ended up in the bucket there.

I think Mr. Southgate is the person from near Regina, SK that has bought - or committed to buy - CN/CP passenger equipment from all over the U.S. and Canada. Has he moved any of this equipment to home base in SK yet?

My list has the following cars gone to Southern Prairie Railway / Ogema Heritage Railway Assoc. There were the possibility of a couple more CPR WS cars also slated, but nothing concrete.

CNR #1089 "CAPE TORMENTINE" from Florida Railway Museum (Florida Gulf Coast Railroad)

CNR # 1177 GREEN BANK (6 Roomette-4 Bedroom-6 Section) from Rail Voyages

CNR coaches # 5226 and 5228, both from NRHS - Bluewater Chapter

CPR WS # 404925 (ex BAGGAGE # 4747), from CPR

Also in the modernization program, the cars electrical systems were converted from 32 Volt to 110 Volt. The 6 cars acquired by CNR all went to VIA in March 1978, as sleeping cars. The 2 cars rebuilt to DAYNIGHTER lost their unique porthole windows, with new vestibule doors, and blanked out or replaced with standard sealed sashes.

# 2142 "WANAPITEI RIVER" was converted to 52 seat DAYNIGHTER # 5743 in June 1978. 1993 (Nov) to Feather River Railroad Society / Western Pacific Railroad Museum (donated by Mr. Jack Hathaway). 2016 not listed on website.

# 2143 "WARPATH RIVER" info in previous posts

# 2144 "VERMILLION RIVER" 1986 (July) to Gateway Rail Tours.

# 2145 "DAUPHIN RIVER" was converted to 52 seat DAYNIGHTER # 5744 in June 1978. 1990 (Nov) to Eidelweiss (still born tourist train). 1991 (Feb) to Hull Chelsea Wakefield Railroad, Farm Point QC. 1998 (May) scrapped, Farm Point QC.

# 2146 "TORCH RIVER" 1993 returned to CNR, WS-COACH # 40115. 2016 probably still in service.

Information, my notes, Canadian National Railways (1992 / 2997) Lepkey and West, Canadian Trackside Guide (various)

Ted -

Thanks very much for this list; the identification name of "Lake Pepin" for the #4 car was especially welcome as I could see that the black and white photo of the Milwaukee Road car submitted by Skytop45 was not the "Lake Keechelus", but wasn't quite sure what the car name actually read. For the display with the Hiawatha artifact, a color photo of the Lake Keechelus in its orange and maroon paint, would be best, but one of the other 10 cars would probably be okay as an alternate. If such a photo isn't available, then perhaps a "colorized" photo might do if one could be done. And then finally, we could always just use a black and white photo of the Lake Keechelus or one of the other cars in the group.

"MILW yellow" (originally called "CM&St.P Standard Yellow") is what we commonly call Milwaukee Road Orange (or, at times, Harvest Orange). Similarly, "CM&St.P Standard Red" is what we commonly call the Maroon color on Milwaukee Road equipment.

Peter -

This is just a bit confusing. So I guess the paint job on 1/31/55 into "Milw Rd Yellow" was actually just a repaint back into the original colors that the car came in when delivered to the Milwaukee Road in 1948. The car as pictured on page 1 of this thread was not given that Union Pacific Yellow paint scheme until 10/10/57, which is probably when the Pullman Company removed thev Hiawatha emblem from the side of the car. Have I got this right?
