Does anyone know how they connected the Shay driveline to the diesel powerplant? The photo doesn't show much detail.

They used a tourch converter off of the engine. The crankshaft was replaced with a streight shaft that had a chain sprocket. Roller chain was used between the tc and the drive line.

I'd bet money that the 5 bell airhorn atop the machine came from Bob Swanson of the Island. These later were marketed as Airchime, IIRC.

The late Elwood White had some nice movies of CFP including the diesel Shay. I was able to show them at Winterail in Stockton, CA around 2013 or so.

So, the drive was diesel directly to torque convertor (no electric motor)--kind of like the RDC drive train. That would have required some sort of transmission/gearbox for reverse. The body looks like it was taken from some sort of industrial locomotive. A one-of-a-kind. I imagine it could take similar grades that a Shay could take.

I wonder how much else of the donor shay was reused for CFP 98. The cab door looks rather "old-timey."

Now I'm not one to usual revive old threads, but the Skagit engine has me VERY curious. Was that built in house like the information seems to suggest? A friend I work with forwarded me pictures of the engine, and frankly I know next to nothing about that creature. Is there any sources of information regarding that locomotive floating around? My curiosity is piqued and I'd love to know more.

Never seen these locomotives before. Very interesting. Anyone know what the fate of this one was?

To the best of my knoledge there were 4 Climax locos, 4 Heislers and 6 Shays converted to internal combustion. There are one Climax and Heisler and 2 Shays known to exist.

As to the Skagit locomotive I did not suggest that it was built by them but stated it. It is the prototype of their ZM line.

The Milwaukee Road diesel referenced above was not built by Baldwin, but by Whitcomb. BLW did market Whitcomb locomotives, beginning in the 1930s or so, and eventually took over Whitcomb as a subsidiary, but long after the 1929 builder's date for that MILW unit.
