Does anyone have a 92 day inspection checklist tailored to a GE 44 Tonner with CAT D17000 engines? The few I have seen refer to road locomotives and have a lot of things that do not apply.

I would suggest using Google search with the following string:

DOD Form Diesel-Electric Locomotives

This will lead you to a variety of US military forms for inspection of diesel-electric locomotives, including a fill-able PDF version of Form 0862.

Forms 0862 (daily), 0863 (monthly/quarterly), and 0864 (yearly) inspection forms may provide a suitable starting point to meeting your needs.

The 92-day inspection is inapplicable to SMRS, since it is not part of the general system. That which does apply can be easily handled by a nonprofit heritage railway of limited means. This is by design; partly because we all fought for it in Washington.

While the rules can be confusing, many other railway museums have navigated them. SMRS need but stand on the shoulders of giants.

Rio Vista Junction has a checklist/procedure for Visalia Electric 502 which they use at their annual Maintenance Week. It was developed by Dave Johnston. I have a copy of it and have shared it with the organization in the past.

Unfortunately, due to the amount of litigation stemming from an incident, every operation should have an inspection manual outlining their organizations inspection of equipment and track( at a minimum) standards. While there may be no law that requires you to perform specific inspections, we do need a structured procedure for when and what we inspect. Remember folks, if the FRA rules apply to you and even if they don't, they are the bare minimums you have to perform if you fall under their jurisdiction. Would you want to fly on an airplane or take a trip on a high speed train, if all they did was the minimum to comply with the regulations and failed to follow the OEM recommendations? How would you propose to defend your organization in a lawsuit, if you line of defense is we just do the minimums. I don't like big brother telling me how and when to do anything, but in today's litigious society we all need a document to defend ourselves when someone wants to sue.

Off my soapbox,
