The cat is out of the bag! The D&NE Steam Engine #28 has passed a required FRA hydro test, and work has begun to reassemble the locomotive in order to be pulling passengers on the North Shore Scenic Railroad, hopefully this fall. Today, crews finished putting the "super heater tubes" inside the boiler, getting one step closer to the first test-fire.

In celebration of her successful Hydro, before we fully drained the locomotive we pumped in some air and let her sing:

Why are some of the superheaters different than the others?

Congrats on your progress. Seems this restoration might have some good leadership as things seem to be progressing slow but sure. I like success stories in restorations of steam locomotives, you guys seem to be on that path. Again congratulations. Regards, John.

Apart from differing lengths between the header and flue row within the boiler, not sure how you mean "different." They look like an average set of superheater elements to me.

Some have armor to protect them from cinder cutting; others don't. The ones that don't look to be newly fabricated replacements.

All of the superheater elements were reused, no new units were needed. Having the 28's maintenance records provides a clue as to why the difference and mismatched flues and tubes before the start of this overhaul: 27 and 28 were both purchased by the D&NE in 1955, and were probably overhauled by the DM&IR before being turned over to the D&NE. We know that 28 was re-tubed by the D&NE at some point after sale, as she operated up until 1964 in regular service and on waivers up until 1967-68. 27 appears to have run out her DM&IR flues and been placed in standby, as photos of her in operation after 1961-62 are few and far between. My suggestion is the superheaters without the cinder armor are D&NE replacements, as we know several other appliances like her Barco low water alarm were removed due to lack of available parts before she was retired. The DM&IR was somewhat notorious for putting any and every available feature onto even a small locomotive like 28/332, while the D&NE was a much more frugal operation.

Nick, thanks for the steady updates with photos. IMO, the 28 is one of those very well proportioned 2-8-0's that should look really nice pulling your passenger consist and hopefully an occasional period freight consist as well! Best of wishes on the pending first test fire. Should be an exciting day for everyone involved!

I know the reason for using solid magnesia block on top of the boiler - keep the jacketing from settling down - but what is the advantage of using fiberglass for the rest?

It gets cold in Minnesota, so perhaps this was to help keep the draft going by not letting the smoke freeze?

I seem to recall that the DM&IR had jacketed smoke boxes. Milwaukee Road did too. And CGW. I guess it was just a railroads preference on how they wanted to do it.
