The price was right for materials and the industrial insulation company who donated the labor was looking for an opportunity to train some of their apprentices. Win win.

Lagged Smokebox: as pointed out by Brother Beckman, The DM&IR, Milwaukee and CGW all lagged the smokeboxes of their steam locomotives. The 28's front boiler cover is actually sized for a lagged smokebox.

Thanks. I suspected the determining factor was cost. Let's hope the jacketing stays nice where it covers that soft stuff.
