Dave,

The Ffestiniog was pretty close to selling new locomotives to the Darjeeling & Himalaya at one point; I never heard a price quote for those. I know they're in the process of building other engine(s). I'll make some inquiries and see what I can find out.

I seem to recall a figure of around $1M for the prototype locomotive to be made by DLM for Darjeeling. Sounds pretty steep for an NG 0-4-0T, but this would have been a totally engineered-from-scratch locomotive designed and built to 21st century engineering standards. This price may have included certain parts to be used on the planned built-in-India production locomotives, and it probably included the price of pre-acceptance testing in India.

Regards,
Hugh

OK TJ, set aside between 400K and 1 million from petty cash and we will build you a new Harrington.

Of course, if we could recycle the frames and running gear from one of Ken Riddles old Porter fireless.........or maybe one set of NOS Glover slanted cylinders........

After looking over the posts, it seems I was thinking of the "wrong" engines!! The ones you are thinking of had an ocean view in their past, no? I was thinking "all-weather cabs". About the same size, though.

While I'm not from the Texas State RR, I was living in Texas at the time the new boiler for the 300 was ordered. That initial boiler was part of a trade that Ed McLaughlin worked out while he was in Fort Worth. The Tarantula RR traded a new boiler for the 300 for TSRR No. 200, ex-SP 2248. I believe Dixon built it.

Tom is having problems with his computer and Natasha is now at Georgetown Loop.

Both the Dixie and the Heisler have had complete new boilers built in the past. A couple years ago both had new tubes and sheets, along with firebox work. Heisler just finished new tubes and now the West Side #7 is getting reflued due to some staybolt problems.

Years ago the Climax boiler had been sent to Dixon Boiler Works in LA to have a replacement made and when both owners of RC and the DBW died, the handshake agreement went bye bye. That boiler is gone forever. In its place is a new find from up in Sumpter Valley, Baker White Pine 45 ton Climax which RC traded some cars for.

Am back online ,FOR NOW.

Dixie's boiler was built by Dixon about 1980, all welded construction. The boiler company told Norman Clark that he didn't need telltails in the stays but he insisted on them. They placed the stays on 6 inch centers with 1 1/4 bolts. These conformed to stationary practice at the time. In 1990 both side sheets were replaced as well as the fire box and the staybolt number increased with the stays at 4 inch centers.

Moral: Locomotive practice is not stationary practice. Watch your boiler company and be knowledgeable about boiler repairs.

We had to replace a couple of sections of copper steam line on the HERCULES to keep her operational. The original sections of 1907 metal were kept for the day when she does go into retirement and static display.

But you need the will and the space to store what to a lot of folks look like old beat up or rusty parts.

Charlie,
The Heisler is still on her second boiler. The firebox has been replaced twice in the 30 years I have been working for RC. The original boiler on the Dixie was only rated at 135 pounds by the state inspectors while the replacement boiler carries 200 pounds.
