Thank you very much for those extensive and detailed photos. It's good to have some actual information about this vexed object.

Does anyone know if the museum has announced its plans for the locomotive? A timeline for completed restoration? Are they still planning to steam it? Static display?

They are clearly looking at operation again. Norfolk Southern has a representative interest in this project. If they get it done I am sure we may see it rattling about their lines like 765 has. Why a solid restoration is a must.

Hi,

Slight tangent. I think Horseshoe has been reduced to 2 tracks in some places. It would be great to see two PRR locos climbing the hill at the same time.

Other than the 0-4-0 at Williams Grove, I am not sure what operational PRR locos there are. There are one or two G5(?) 4-6-0s available from the Long Island (Built by Altoona).

The I1 2-10-0 in NY state is not operational AFAIK. I think there is a B6xx 0-6-0 running but am unsure.

Anything else PRR out there?

Doug, Horseshoe Curve is still 3 tracks. At least it was two weeks ago when I rode around it. There are no other PRR mainline Steamers in operation or under restoration except for the LIRR G5s.

PRR #643 in Dillsburg, PA runs, it is the only currently operating PRR steamer.

The only Pennsy steam under restoration (To my knowledge) is the 1361 and G5s No. 39 at Strasburg. Both have a long way to go.

The G5s could be taken into Strasburg's shops and turned out in great operating condition, with Strasburg's usual excellence. It's a matter of how badly PRR and LIRR steam fans want it. There is no better shop, nor a better place to run #39, than the Strasburg Railroad. We should all get behind this reconstruction. Remember, the locomotive is owned by the RMLI, a non-profit. Restoration can only be good for all parties concerned.
