Whenever Google Earth last shot Portola, CA the UP wrecker was still there. There is a claim on line that it was donated to the Western Pacific RR Museum. As of yesterday the museum has no knowledge of it being donated. The error probably comes from it being parked right next to their site.

the Portola Museum does have it's own crane and crane support car, has had it for decades. I don't know what size or make it is. They used to use it fairly regularly to do stuff around the museum. Might not have anyone now how knows how to operate it. I'm not up there anymore to be up-to-date on what goes on up there nowadays.

The WP wrecker was mentioned recently in regards to the restoration of their steam locomotive. They got it running but were unable to use it for reasons "beyond our control." I suspect a lack of certification of the wrecker or operator.

That's a shame, although it might have been a blessing to put it out of its misery. Looks like it lost its boom several years ago. Too bad that none of the railroad museums in the area saved it.
