Railbike operation in the Portland area. This website has a video. Personally, the larger European versions look a lot safer to me. Because of the potential for idiots to ride on active rail lines, I don't think railbikes should be sold to the general public, but sale to organizations that have express permission to use a piece of track should be OK.

I'm glad you said that Bob. I was on a trip on the D&SNG a year ago when the train stopped and the crew impounded several rail bikes that had been hidden in the underbrush near Cascade Wye. It's apparently a big problem for them. They turn the bikes over to the Sheriff in Durango.

Apparently lots of climbers use the bikes to get into the back country instead of hiking or taking the train like they should. I spent a week hiking in the Needle Mountains one year and it was really great taking the train in and out. You had to flag the train to get picked up. A steam train ride, followed by a nice steak dinner is a great way to end a week of back packing!
