With the new front plate now welded into position on the frame, I installed the smokebox door and mocked up where the bumper plate is to be welded on.

At least it is starting to look like a locomotive again.

Rick, there's some progress to be seen in your locomotive! Mocking up the restored locomotive front gives viewers a fair estimation of what they are supporting. It all helps.

BTW, I wear my Porter tank locomotive tee-shirt with pride! In that manner, I'm part of your project.

Keep the updates coming.

Rick, you don't cease to impress... And you're making me think (which is never a good thing!). Now aren't there still some of the other J&L engines floating around, or are they persona non grata?

There are three other survivors, and parts of a fourth. Nothing would make me happier than to provide them all a home if the possibility presents itself someday.

That's a locomotive? (Just kidding of course.)

When I first saw five of these beasts sitting in a row from a distance it was only because I had a Porter catalog that showed one of them that I was able to recognize them as locomotives. The late owner of Crown Metal Products, then located in Elizabeth Twp., Allegheny County, PA had rescued all 5 from the torch when that part of the J&L Steel Pittsburgh Works was being "repurposed." How those things even lasted that long without being added to the product line at J&L is a major miracle. Seeing one come back to life will rank as "beyond a miracle."

Good show, Rick.

So if there's five (maybe four and a half?) of the J&L beasts floating around, where are they these days? I would assume Rick must know...

And my credit card got charged for a 2nd edition shirt and shipping, although it hasn't arrived yet. Does that count as support?
[I do get lots of E-mails from the fund raising company asking if I want to start a project with them. ]

If I remember correctly they were part of a fundraiser that Rick did a while back...

Yes, Ricks fund raiser. Tee shirt sales make a huge difference for locomotive restorations. Sometimes it's the difference between buying parts or steel, or getting a permit. There are some really neat ones out there!

Excellent work, Rick. Always watch for your updates. Will there be a 3rd offering on the shirts?

I will be working on a different shirt design for the next offering. Not sure what that will look like yet. Depends on what our graphic artist comes up with.

The last fundraiser raised enough money to purchase the new tubes for the boiler.

I'm not quite sure how it ended up there, but J&L 62 resides in Meade, CO in private ownership. It has been written about on the Youngstown Steel Heritage blog.

Hi,

Glad to see the progress.

Sorry, but my first thought when I saw the front was "That's Diesel" on Thomas the tank engine.

I spent many hours watching the series in the 1990s with my niece (1990) and nephew (1992) watching.
