Yes, paint layer research was done at Spencer. The guys who did it talked to me about it. No Civil War era paint remained underneath. Whetever the officially authorized paint scheme was at that time, during the war it would have looked damn shabby in any case, nothing like the beautiful model. I've reached the point at which I truly hate to see overrestored artifacts that look new unless they are being interpreted as new rather than in-service. Patina, like context, matters.

A correction. I was wrong about the ankle rails, which were only on the Genersl, not the Texas. I checked the Wilbur Kurtz drawings, the best depictions of both locos appearance during the event.
