What alternatives to white lead have people used, either successfully or not, on seams, around openings, etc. when applying new canvas passenger car roofs?

White elastomeric roof coatings in 5 gallon buckets. Several coats to saturate, an undercoat first to size the canvas to the substrate. It can be painted over with acrylic exterior paint to suit.
